FLN Day under Shiksha Saptah observed at SCERT Sikkim

As part of a week-long celebration of “Shiksha Saptah” being organized by the Education Department in the state - a State Level Exhibition & Seminar was organized on 23rd of July 2024 in the auditorium hall of the State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT), Lower Burtuk, Gangtok to commemorate the 4th anniversary of National Education Policy (NEP-2020). This programme marks the second day of a series of programmes scheduled for the whole week (07 Days from 22nd to 28th July 2024) with all the schools and Teacher Education Institutes across the state engaging in a wide variety of activities in their respective institutions with day-wise themes.
The themes selected for celebrating “Shiksha Saptah” represent the important areas which are given emphasis in the new National Curriculum Framework of School Education. Activities of Day 01 (22nd July, 2024) were based on the theme of Teaching Learning Materials (TLMs) in Schools and Teacher Educational Institutes across the state, Day 02 focussed on activities related to the Foundational Literacy and Numeracy (FLN) Mission. The theme for Day 03 is Physical Education and sports, Day 04 is cultural activities, Day 05 is skill development, Day 06 is environmental care and protection, and Day 07 is Tithi Bhoj to celebrate community participation and their roles as important stakeholders in the education of children.
The state-level Exhibition of TLM and Seminar on FLN jointly organised by SCERT and DIET (Gangtok) had the presence of Secretary (School Education Mr. Tashi Chophel as Chief Guest and Director SCERT Sikkim Dr. Rabin Chhetri, Mr. A D Chhetri, Additional Director (Samagra Shiksha), Mrs. Asha Khatri, Joint Director (Textbooks), Dr. Shanti Ram Adhikari and Mrs. Tshering Lhamu Bhutia, Joint Directors of SCERT. The other official representatives from different directorates of the Education Department, Faculty members of SCERT and DIET (Gangtok), teachers from different schools from Gangtok and student-teachers of DIET (Gangtok) were also present in the programme. The program was anchored by Ms. Ranju Pradhan, Assistant Professor (SCERT).
The exhibition of TLMs was organized by the DIET (Gangtok) in which many indigenous TLMs along with toys prepared by the student-teachers were exhibited. In the Seminar which followed the exhibition - Mrs. Tshering Lhamu Bhutia, Joint Director (SCERT) highlighted the recommendations of NEP 2020 with respect to Foundational Literacy and Numeracy. She also presented information about various initiatives taken by the SCERT and Education Department such as the implementation of the three-month school preparedness program “Vidya Pravesh”, the development of the state curriculum for Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE), orientation training of School Heads and teachers on FLN, intervention for numeracy skills development “Special Numeracy Programme (SNP)”. Ms. Durga Shrestha, Lecturer of DIET (Gangtok) presented a talk on the importance, usage, types of TLMs and their significance in enhancing the teaching-learning process.
Director SCERT Sikkim Dr. Rabin Chhetri while explaining the background of the celebration of “Shiksha Saptha” explained how the Aim of School Education envisaged in the National Curriculum Framework of School Education (NCF-SE 2023) is aligned with the national vision of becoming a developed nation by 2047. The Chief Guest Mr Chophel, in his address, mentioned about success stories of some of the nation’s becoming world powers and said that the NEP-2020, if implemented properly has the potential to make the national dream a reality. He also urged the present and future teachers present in the program to work with such passion which will result in the development of our future citizens as envisaged in the National Policy.
Similar programs comprising of TLM Exhibition and seminar lectures on FLN mission were also organized by DIET (Gyalshing) and DIET (Namchi) in their respective campuses which had the presence of District Officials from the Education Department, teachers from different schools, members of the School Management Committee and parents of the students.
