District Education Office, Gangtok launches An Introduction to Foundational Literacy and Numeracy Pedagogy Programme for Primary Teachers
Inauguration of An Introduction to Foundational Literacy and Numeracy Pedagogy Programme for 30 Primary Teachers of 15 Standalone Government Primary Schools under Gangtok District, took place on 20th July, 2024 in the Auditorium of Modern Government Senior Secondary School, Gangtok. The programme had the presence of Mrs. Tseringkee Chingapa, Chief Education Officer Gangtok, Dr. Hannah Yonzan, Joint Director/Academics, Mrs. Mala Zigdal Dorjee, Principal of Modern Govt. SSS, Resource Persons - Ms. Dawa Lahmu Yolmo, Ms. Reshma Thapa & Ms. Mamta Rai from Himalayan Teacher Professional Development Foundation, Officials from the Distict Education Office, Gangtok and Teacher participants.
The said programme is one of the components of District Academic Improvement Programme, an initiative of Gangtok District for better academic achievement of all students. It is a five months long programme, three months (July – September) of training on FLN Pedagogy followed by two months (October – November) of on-site monitoring & support by the Resource Persons in order to ensure its proper implementation. There will be two days training per month for three consecutive months, a total of six days continuous professional development.
The objectives of the training programme is to build the capacity of the teachers teaching English and Mathematics in Classes IV & V and to enhance the achievement of Foundational Literacy & Numeracy skills by the students of Classes IV & V.
The Programme began with the welcome speech by Ms. Babita H. Subba, AD/Acad. followed by the brief overview of the FLN training by JD/Academics. She highlighted on the significance of FLN and emphasized on how the COVID-19 Pandemic has impacted the achievement of FLN skills in the students presently studying in Classes IV & V as they were in the Foundational Stage during the Pandemic and has created a learning gap. So, this programme is expected to support in the professional development of teachers that would help students in achieving the FLN skills, so that, they do not drop out of the school instead there will be a smooth transition from Preparatory Stage to the Middle Stage.
The CEO, Gangtok encouraged the teachers to participate keenly and implement professional skills learnt in the Training back at their schools. District Academic Improvement Programme is a dream project and working in collaboration will certainly bring amazing transformation in the field of education.
Lastly, the Inaugural Session was concluded with a Vote of Thanks by Ms. Dity Rai, AEO and the training session started right after that.
