ONE-DAY FIELD VISIT OF MANGAN NAGAR PANCHAYAT COUNCILLORS AND STAFF TO MARTAM LANDFILL
On, 8/07/2024, Mangan Nagar Panchayat Hon'ble Councillors & Staff visited the Martam landfill site. The objective of the visit was to study the Management process of Martam Landfill as well as its ongoing bio-mining process. The team was warmly welcomed by Assistant Engineer, GMC Shri. Dhadi Ram Dhakal and his team.
Hon'ble Municipal President Smt. Norkit Lepcha, Hon' ble Councillor Smt. Premkit Lepcha, Hon'ble Councillor Miss Tshering Doma Bhutia participated in the visit along with MEO, MNP Shri Tempo Tashi Bhutia, Office Superintendent (OS), Bazaar Inspectors & staff of Mangan Nagar Panchayat.
During their visit, the team was provided with a comprehensive briefing on the various operations and processes involved in managing the landfill. The facility's staff explained the methods used for solid waste management, detailing the procedures for collection, segregation, and disposal of waste. They highlighted the importance of these practices in minimizing environmental impact and promoting sustainability.
One of the key focuses of the briefing was the ongoing bio-mining works at the landfill. The team learned about the innovative techniques being used to excavate and process old waste, recover valuable materials and reduce the volume of waste in the landfill. This process not only helps in reclaiming land but also contributes to resource recovery and environmental protection.
The team had a successful visit and was able to learn more about the management of Municipal waste for a larger amount of garbage that GMC receives as compared to Mangan Nagar Panchayat.
Mangan Nagar Panchayat expresses gratitude to the Secretary, Urban Development Department as well as Gangtok Municipal Corporation for arranging the Field Visit to MNP wherein Mangan Nagar Panchayat with all the knowledge from the visit will impart under Mangan Nagar Panchayat as well for more successful management of Solid waste in the ULB and state.
