PRESS NOTE:-An Introductory meeting was held on 25th June, 2024 at Gangtok Smart City Conference Hall where Hon’ble Minister, Urban Development Department & Food and Civil Supplies Department, Shri Bhoj Raj Rai and Hon’ble Advisor, Urban Development Department, Shri Delay Namgyal Barfungpa graced the occasion as the chief guest and guest of honour respectively. The meeting aimed to apprise about the ongoing and upcoming projects aimed at transforming Urban towns under Gangtok Smart City and projects under proposed funding of Asian Development Bank. The discussions highlighted several significant developments and future plans under the UDD initiative, which focuses on sustainable and inclusive urban development.
A welcome address was delivered by Secretary, UDD Shri M.T. Sherpa who laid emphasis on the significance of these central and multilateral agency funded projects. He also gave brief details of various projects under smart cities, funding parameters, issues and challenges etc. While welcoming Hon’ble Minister and Hon’ble Advisor in the meeting, he assured of full devotion and efforts from the officials for implementation of Government projects and policies in letter and spirit. An introductory brief was presented by Chief Executive Officer & Chief Engineer, Shri Bhupendra Kuthari where he apprised about the project background, challenges & outcomes. Additional Director, Deepankar Lama also laid emphasis on Integrated Command Control Centre and Smart Intervention.
A detailed presentation on Gangtok Smart City and Sikkim Integrated Urban Development Project was presented by Urban Planner, Shri Niranjan Kapil. The presentation comprised of introduction to project, institutional framework, completed and ongoing works, its outcomes, readiness, guidelines, compliance and time bound action plan. The proposed projects under the funding of the Asian Development Bank were also discussed, showcasing the international collaboration and support in enhancing Sikkim’s urban scenario. The meeting concluded with a commitment to transparent and efficient implementation of all projects, ensuring maximum benefits to the citizens of Sikkim & Tourists.
An interactive session then followed where Hon’ble Advisor, highlighted on the urban infrastructure development such as parking, water supply and drainage issues in Gangtok.
Hon’ble Minister emphasized the importance of these projects in improving the infrastructure and quality of life in Sikkim. He expressed his thoughts on the urban projects in Sikkim, emphasizing their crucial role in fostering holistic development and improving the living standards of residents. He highlighted that these projects are designed not only to enhance infrastructure but also to promote sustainable practices, technological advancements, and economic growth. The Minister reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring timely and efficient project execution, underscoring the Government's dedication to making Sikkim a model of modern Urban Development. He also stressed on the role of each individual members in the team to give their best and to bring positive changes to the towns for uplifting the urban scenario of Sikkim.
