Press Note: Inauguration of RRR Centre by Gangtok Municipal Corporation
The Gangtok Municipal Corporation is pleased to announce the inauguration of its Reduce Reuse Recycle (RRR) Centre at its premises in Deorali on June 25, 2024. This initiative marks a significant advancement in our commitment to effective waste management as per the Municipal Solid Waste Management, 2016 guidelines. The urban area of Gangtok is embracing the 3R principles to convert Waste to Wealth, aligning with the 'Meri LIFE, Mera SWACHH SHEHAR' campaign launched by Union Minister Shri Hardeep S. Puri on May 15, 2023. The inauguration ceremony, held at the Gangtok Municipal Corporation office, was attended by the Hon’ble Mayor, Hon’ble Councilors, Municipal Commissioner, along with officials and staff of the Corporation.
This initiative underscores our dedication to reducing waste and conserving resources by promoting the principles of reducing consumption, reusing materials, and recycling waste. The RRR Centre has been established in response to limited land availability, leading to the initiation of an accessible RRR point. Here, citizens can responsibly deposit recyclable items such as old clothes, leather goods, books, toys, papers, bags, and other fabric items. This effort aims to prevent these items from ending up in landfills, drains, or watercourses within the city.
In our ongoing waste management efforts, only dry and wet waste will be collected by our daily garbage collection vehicles. To ensure ease of access for all residents, GMC will deploy dedicated vehicles to collect these items from each ward once a week, starting in August. Detailed schedules for weekly collections will be communicated via our official website www.gmcsikkim.org. This initiative is designed to foster a culture of recycling and responsible waste disposal among citizens.
We remind all residents to refrain from disposing of these items in drains or watercourses (nalis and jhoras). Violations will be subject to penalties under the Municipal Solid Waste Management Rule, 2016.
For further information and inquiries, we encourage citizens to contact the Gangtok Municipal Corporation.
