Dear people of Sikkim,
On the occasion of World Environment Day 2024, I wish to congratulate each one of you for making possible the greening of Sikkim, which now stands as the greenest state in India. This achievement has garnered headlines not only nationally but also internationally. Sikkim is celebrated globally as an organic and nature-loving state of India.
Sikkim's 'Mero Rukh Mero Santiti' initiative sets a global benchmark for environmental stewardship. Alongside its goal of achieving Viksit Bharat @2047, Sikkim remains steadfast in its commitment to environmental protection.
World Environment Day truly resonates with the values of our state, underscored by the fitting slogan, “Our Land, Our Future. We are Generation Restoration.”
Sikkim has played a crucial role in the conservation and protection of our natural resources. Our pristine wetlands, lush green mountains, and fertile valleys are home to myriad varieties of flora and fauna, making Sikkim one of the four biodiversity hotspots in India and one of the 36 biodiversity hotspots in the world.
At 30.77 per cent, Sikkim boasts the highest percentage of the state’s total geographical area under the Protected Area network with one National Park, seven wildlife sanctuaries, and one conservation reserve.
Sikkim has been a pioneer in implementing environment-friendly initiatives, including bans on burning plastic waste and tyres;burning firecrackers; importing, using, and selling single-use plastic; and on mineral water bottles of size 2 litres and below. We have also banned plastic carry bags, declared our towns litter-free and spit-free zones, and implemented no-honking policies within towns, hospitals, and school areas.
Sikkim has made significant strides towards the conservation of its natural heritage, serving as a torchbearer not only in the northeastern Himalayan region but also as a beacon of hope for the entire nation. This year’s World Environment Day emphasizes restoration, a principle that Sikkim has embraced fully, committing to a future where all citizens work together for a better tomorrow.
Let us build a greener, cleaner, and more sustainable future for our beloved state and the world at large.
Thank you, and let us celebrate World Environment Day with renewed dedication and action!
