Weekly Inspection of Commercial Establishments Conducted in Gangtok District
Gangtok, June 26 (IPR): Sub-Divisional Magistrate (HQ), Mr Mahendra Chettri, today led a joint inspection team comprising officials from various line departments to conduct a weekly inspection of commercial establishments near Sisa Golai in Gangtok.
The inspection focused on ensuring compliance with food hygiene standards, the prohibition on the use of single-use plastics, safety of food storage facilities, validity of food products, possession of labour cards, designated smoking zones and segregation of dry and wet waste. Managers of the establishments were also directed to produce valid and updated licences required for operating their businesses.
Commercial establishments found violating Food Safety regulations or operating without valid licences were imposed penalties under the relevant provisions and directed to appear before the concerned line departments for further rectification and compliance.
During the inspection, the SDM (HQ) and officials from the participating departments instructed owners and managers to maintain hygienic kitchen conditions and ensure that only fresh and safe food is served to customers. The inspection team also verified whether food handlers were adhering to prescribed safety measures, including the use of headgear and gloves while preparing food.
Officials from the Labour Department apprised staff members about the Employees' State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) scheme, highlighting the insurance benefits and social security coverage available to workers in the event of workplace accidents and other contingencies.
The inspection concluded with necessary directions issued to owners and managers to strictly adhere to the prescribed rules and regulations, with emphasis on strengthening compliance and improving public health and safety standards across commercial establishments.
