Watershed Yatra Flagged Off in Sikkim to Promote Community-Driven Approach
Gangtok, February 6 (IPR): Mr Tenzing Norbu Lamtha, MLA cum Advisor Forest and Environment Department flagged off the Watershed Yatra from the premise of Forest Secretariat here at Deorali, today.
The flagging off programme had the presence of Dr Pradeep Kumar Secretary cum PCCF Forest and Environment Department, Mr Udai Gurung CF Forest and Environment Department, Ms Bhumika Rai District Forest Officer Khangchendzonga Wildlife, Ms Arati Basnet Joint Director State Level Nodal Agency, Senior Officers, Officers and officials of concerned line departments.
The Watershed Yatra is a mass outreach programme to create awareness about Watershed activities in Sikkim carried out by Watershed Development component of Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchaye Yojana (WDC-PMSKY 2.0) project which is being carried across 27 states and 2 Union Territories which was launched on February 5, 2025. The theme for the project is 'Jal Laye, Dhan Dhanny.'
The Yatra aims to achieve 'Community Driven Approach' (Jan Bhaghidari) which is seen as a necessity for implementation of Watershed projects. It also aims to improve productive potential of rainfed/degraded land through integrated watershed management to strengthen community based local institutions for promotion of livelihood and watershed sustainability and to improve efficiency of watershed project across learning and incentive mechanism.
The implementation of the project is carried out as per National Guideline 2021 for WDC-PMKSY 2.0 drawn up by Department of Land Resources Government of India. Further, the Department of Land Resources Government of India has approved and allocated area of 20,000 hectares for 6 projects to be implemented in the State of Sikkim with fund sharing of 90:10 ration between Central and State Government from the year 2021-22 to 2025-26. The project is being implemented by State Level Nodal Agency (SLNA) Sikkim under the Forest and Environment Department Government of Sikkim in alignment with the National Guideline 2021 for WDC-PMKSY 2.0.
The Watershed vehicle from Gangtok will travel to Pakyong, Mangan, Namchi and Soreng wherein they will visit various projects pertaining to Watershed projects.
