Water ATM inaugurated at STNM Hospital with CSR Support of Torrent Pharma

Gangtok, January 5 (IPR): A Water ATM, which dispenses both hot and cold purified drinking water, was formally inaugurated by the Minister of Health and Family Welfare and Culture Departments Mr GT Dhungel, in the presence of District Collector Gangtok Mr Tushar G Nikhare at Sir Thutob Namgyal Memorial (STNM) Hospital, Gangtok, today.
Reinforcing the State Government’s commitment to strengthening public health facilities and improving patient welfare, the Gangtok District Administration, with Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) support from Torrent Pharma, had installed a Water ATM in the premises.
The programme was attended by Sub-Divisional Magistrate, Gangtok,Mr Abhijit Patil; Medical Superintendent, STNM Hospital, Ms Ruth Yonzon; and General Manager, Torrent Pharma, Shri Suresh Nath Roy, along with other senior officials of the district administration, the Health Department, and representatives of the CSR partner.
The initiative was undertaken with the blessings of the Chief Minister of Sikkim, Mr Prem Singh Tamang, and aims to ensure easy access to safe and clean drinking water for patients, attendants, and healthcare personnel within the State’s premier referral hospital.
Addressing the gathering, the Health Minister thanked Torrent Pharma for extending CSR support towards the installation of the Water ATM and expressed appreciation to the District Collector, Gangtok, and his team for facilitating the initiative. He also commended the Medical Superintendent of STNM Hospital and her team for their cooperation. The Minister urged that the facility be properly maintained and informed that purified drinking water is being provided at a nominal cost, with the amount collected solely for maintenance purposes. He added that the water is filtered through a UV-based purification process to ensure quality and safety. Highlighting the larger objective, he stated that the initiative aims to provide pure drinking water to the public at a time when water contamination has become a growing concern across the country. He further announced that a water harvesting structure is coming up at STNM Hospital to address long-term water availability challenges.
District Collector, Gangtok, Mr Tushar G Nikhare, in his address, extended warmest regards and heartfelt thanks to Torrent Pharmaceuticals for their CSR contribution. He thanked the Medical Superintendent for allocating adequate space within the hospital premises for the installation of the Water ATM, ensuring convenient access to safe drinking water for the public. He informed that this is the second Water ATM installed in Gangtok and reiterated that the nominal amount collected from users is meant only for the maintenance of the facility. He concluded by once again expressing sincere appreciation to Torrent Pharmaceuticals for their continued support towards public welfare initiatives.
The installation of the Water ATM at STNM Hospital is expected to ensure a reliable supply of safe drinking water, reduce dependence on single-use plastic bottles, and promote environmentally sustainable practices within the hospital premises.
