Transport Department Shifts RTO-cum-Testing Centre to Jalipool
Gangtok, July 21 (IPR):
MLA-cum-Advisor, Transport and Skill Development Departments, Mr Madan Cintury, inaugurated the Regional Transport Office-cum-Testing Centre at the SNT Complex, Jalipool, today.
The MLA-cum-Advisor, in his address, stated that the new location would enable better functioning due to increased space. He said the previous office, located in the town centre, faced space constraints and contributed to traffic congestion. He informed that the new site would help ease such issues. He also reiterated that the project is supported by the Central Government. He appealed to drivers to regularly test the fitness of their vehicles to ensure road safety.
The Regional Transport Officer, Gangtok, Mr Dilip Sharma, presented the technical report. He said the previous location could not accommodate vehicle testing at scale. He added that the new centre is equipped with automated vehicle testing machines and can handle a higher volume of vehicles.
Mr Dilip Sharma stated that having both the RTO office and testing centre in one place would streamline operations. He informed that the centre also includes a driving test facility, which enables eligible applicants to receive their licences on the same day, subject to passing the test. He noted that the lack of vehicle fitness testing at the earlier location contributed to road accidents, which the new facility seeks to address.
It may be noted that the office earlier located in Gangtok, has been relocated to Jalipool. The facility has been set up under the Transport Department, Government of Sikkim, with support from the Central Government.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by Chairman Chalak Welfare Board, Mr Sonam Ongdup Bhutia, Commissioner-cum-Secretary, Transport Department Mr Prabhakar Verma, Secretary Transport Department Mr Manish Pradhan, Secretary State Transport Authority Mr Dukpa Sherpa, Chief Engineer Sikkim Nationalised Transport Mr Sonam Shangderpa, Additional Chief Engineer Sikkim Nationalised Transport Mr Binoy Pradhan, and other senior officials of Transport Department.
