Training on "Friday Safety Five" Held at Mangan Mangan
Mangan, August 4 (IPR): A one-day Training on the observance of "Friday Safety Five: 5 Minutes Every Friday, Safety for Life" was organised today at Zilla Bhawan, Mangan, by the Sikkim State Disaster Management Authority (SSDMA) in collaboration with the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), Mangan. The programme brought together teachers from Government Senior Secondary Schools and Anganwadi Workers from across the district.
The initiative aims to institutionalise a five-minute disaster awareness session every Friday in schools and Anganwadi Centres to promote a culture of safety among children from an early age. During the first phase, the programme will cover 91 Senior Secondary Schools and 1,308 Anganwadi Centres across the State, followed by Primary and Secondary Schools in the second phase. Participants were informed that the knowledge, awareness and practical skills imparted during the training are to be passed on to children through the weekly Friday Safety Five sessions in their respective institutions, ensuring that disaster preparedness becomes a regular part of children's learning.
DC Mangan, Mr Anant Jain, in his address, stated that North Sikkim is highly vulnerable to natural disasters owing to its terrain and unpredictable weather conditions. He said that disaster-related incidents continue to occur in the district and emphasised that the training programme has been designed in an institutional manner to strengthen preparedness at the grassroots. Urging the participants to make the most of the programme, he expressed confidence that the knowledge gained would be effectively disseminated among children and contribute towards building a more resilient community.
The resource persons reiterated the importance of maintaining safe workplaces and building a disaster-resilient society. They highlighted that, as North Sikkim is a disaster-prone district, it is of utmost importance to inculcate safety habits among children from an early age so that appropriate responses become part of their muscle memory during emergencies.
During the technical sessions, resource persons delivered presentations on the basics of disaster management and preparedness, including safety measures during disasters such as earthquakes, landslides, fires, etc. Practical demonstrations on Drop, Cover and Hold, basic first aid for fractures, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), and the proper use of fire extinguishers were conducted. Participants were also briefed extensively on the dos and don'ts to be followed during different disaster scenarios.
Joint Director-cum-District Project Officer, Mr Karma Dorjee Bhutia, presented an overview of disaster preparedness initiatives in the district. He highlighted the digital initiatives undertaken by DDMA, the need for timeline-based action plans, and the functioning of the Incident Response Team in ensuring coordinated and effective disaster response.
Also present on the occasion were Director SSDMA Mr Rajiv Roka, Deputy Directors SSDMA Ms Kessang Nima Bhutia, Ms Ada Lawrence and Mr Keshav Koirala, HR Professional Mr Kunzang Namgyal Bhutia, Joint Director-cum-District Project Officer Mr Karma Dorjee Bhutia, Deputy Director Education Mr Pintso T. Lepcha, resource persons and SSDMA training officials.
