Tour De Sikkim Cycling Expedition Reaches Gangtok, Takes on High-Altitude Route towards Nathula

Date: 05-Nov-2026
Gangtok, Nov 5 (IPR): The Tour De Sikkim cycling expedition, being conducted as part of the ongoing Sikkim Adventure Tourism Fest 2026, reached Gangtok today as the participating cyclists continued their four-day journey across the state’s diverse mountain terrain.
Flagged off from the Indian Himalayan Centre for Adventure and Eco-Tourism (IHCAE), Chemchey, Namchi, on November 4, the expedition proceeded towards Gangtok on its second day, with the cycling team taking on the challenging high-altitude stretch towards Tsomgo Lake, Nathula and Hangu Lake.
The cyclists trailed along the route through Tsomgo Lake, offering a glimpse of the expedition as participants navigated Sikkim’s winding mountain roads and steep terrain amid the scenic landscape of the high Himalayas. The challenging alpine trail tested their endurance, technical riding skills and bike-handling abilities across steep gradients, sharp bends and high-altitude stretches. The demanding terrain, characterised by rocky sections, rugged trails and changing mountain conditions, offered a true test of mountain biking in the high-altitude Himalayan region.
Adding a note of inspiration to the expedition is a 67-year-old cyclist from Delhi, who is among the 13 participants undertaking the four-day cycling journey. His participation reflects the spirit of adventure and endurance that the expedition seeks to promote, demonstrating that age need not be a barrier to exploring challenging terrains and embracing active travel experiences.
The expedition is scheduled to proceed towards Aritar via the hairpin route of Zuluk on November 6, before culminating at Likhimtar on November 7.
The Tour De Sikkim is one of the key activities of Sikkim Adventure Tourism Fest 2026, aimed at promoting cycling and adventure-based tourism while providing participants with an opportunity to experience the state’s varied landscapes, mountain routes and rich natural and cultural heritage.
The cycling team is being supervised by Deputy Director, Adventure Tourism, Mr Brinda Mohan Subba, and supported by designated escorts Mr Karma Gyamtso Sherpa and Mr Bishal Thapa, along with a sweep vehicle to ensure safety, coordination and logistical support throughout the expedition.
