Soreng District celebrates “World Soil Day” at Daramdin (Soreng)
Soreng, December 5(IPR):
Soreng District celebrated the “World Soil Day” 2024 on a theme “Caring for Soils : Measure, Monitor and Manage” at Daramdin Bazar organised by Agriculture Department Soreng District in collaboration with United Academy School Daramdin.
The event was attended by the Chief Guest Ms Geeta Sharma (Zilla Panchayat Lungchok Daramdin Territorial Constituency) and was accompanied by Panchayat Members, Mr Rabin Gurung (Additional Director Horticulture Department), Mr Ongdi Sherpa (BDO Daramdin), Dr Ningma Doma Sherpa (HOD Agriculture Department Mahatma Gandhi University Daramdin), Mr Manish Pradhan (Deputy Director Agriculture Department), Mr DP Sharma (Deputy Director Horticulture Department) and Mr Diwas Rai (Principal United Academy School Daramdin).
The event commenced with the gathering taking the ‘World Soil Day Pledge’, reaffirming their commitment to soil conservation and sustainable practices.
Ms Geeta Sharma discussed the incentives provided by the Sikkim Government in the sectors of milk production and vegetable farming. She highlighted various Central Government agricultural schemes that benefit the farmers at large. She informed the gathering that Mr MN Sherpa, Speaker (SLA) and MLA (Daramdin Constituency), is keen on transforming Daramdin into a Model Farming Village.
Dr. Ningma (Resource Person) provided a detailed explanation of the critical role soil plays in maintaining ecological balance and supporting life. She outlined how soil is fundamental for agriculture, serving as the primary medium for growing crops, and its role in purifying water resources by filtering pollutants and maintaining the hydrological cycle. Additionally, she highlighted the broader ecosystem benefits of soil, such as supporting biodiversity and regulating carbon cycles.
Referring to the recent incident of soil flooding in the Daramdin area, she pointed out the challenges posed by such events, including land degradation, loss of fertile soil, and impacts on local communities. She emphasized the need for sustainable practices to mitigate these issues.
One key solution Dr. Ningma proposed was adopting Biochar practices. She explained that Biochar, a form of charcoal produced from organic waste, enhances soil fertility, increases water retention, and reduces greenhouse gas emissions. By integrating Biochar into agricultural practices, farmers in Sikkim could improve soil health, increase productivity, and contribute to environmental sustainability.
Her insights underscore the need for proactive measures to address soil-related challenges and promote sustainable farming practices in the region.
BDO Daramdin encouraged students to learn from experts and practice the knowledge gained in their respective homes. He raised concerns about soil degradation and emphasized the responsibility of every individual to preserve soil. He urged the audience to dispose of plastic products properly and to discourage the use of plastics to promote environmental conservation.
A total of 30 Soil Health Cards was handed out to the 30 beneficiaries, along with the presentation of certificates and trophies to the winners of Painting competitions and Quiz competitions.
The Agriculture Department presented a token of appreciation to the chief guest and the Special
