Soreng Celebrates International Women’s Day 2026 at Jautar

Soreng, March 8 (IPR): International Women’s Day 2026 was celebrated at the Indoor Gymnasium Hall, Jautar, Soreng District. The programme was organised by the Sports and Youth Affairs Department, Soreng District on the theme “Sports for Women.”
The event was graced by the Chief Guest, President of the Ex-Servicemen Association of Sikkim, Mr Nar Bahadur Gurung.
In his address, Mr Nar Bahadur Gurung congratulated the gathering and conveyed his best wishes on the occasion of International Women’s Day. He highlighted the achievements and contributions of women in society, citing examples such as the President of India Ms Droupadi Murmu, Deputy Speaker (SLA) Ms Raj Kumari Thapa, and other dignitaries. He also spoke about the importance of discipline in sports activities, health and fitness, and the significance of education in empowering women.
Deputy Director (Sports & Youth Affairs) Ms Mamita Gurung briefed the gathering about the celebration of International Women’s Day. She stated that this year, the day is being celebrated as a nationwide mass participation sporting event organised under the aegis of the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports (GOI) and its two arms, namely the Sports Authority of India and MY Bharat.
The event aims to promote women’s participation in sports, encourage physical fitness, and foster a culture of active living across all age groups through the Government of India’s flagship “Sports for Women” initiative – ASMITA (Achieving Sports Milestones by Inspiring Women Through Action). A total of 250 locations across various districts in the country have been identified to expand the reach of the ASMITA initiative.
During the programme, the following achievers were felicitated:
• Ms Kessang Sherpa – National Athlete (Gold Medalist)
• Ms Reshma Rai – Sub-Junior Boxer, Two-time Gold Medalist (2022) and State Best Boxer (2025)
• Ms Chewang Chopel Tamang – Under-15 winner at the State Badminton Championship 2024 and representative participant at the Sub-Junior and Junior National Championship held in Chennai.
The celebration also featured short running events (competitive category), including:
• 100 meters (Under 13 years)
• 200 meters (13–18 years)
• 400 meters (Above 18 years)
Fun activities such as Zumba by Hit the Beat Soreng and Passing the Ball were also organised.
Certificates and medals were distributed to the winners. The results are as follows:

The event was attended by Senior Welfare Officer Ms Prativa Tamang, Deputy Director (S&YA) Ms Mamita Gurung, US (RDD) Soreng Ms Netup Doma Bhutia, CHO (Health) Ms Saraswati Sharma, Ex-Servicemen, members of the Soreng Badminton Association, PETs from Soreng District, Khelo India Coach, trainees of SSAG Soreng, representatives from the Women, Child, Senior Citizen and Divyangjan Welfare Department, and students.
