Skill Up-Gradation Training Programme on Cutting and Stitching Concludes at Barfok

Gyalshing, June 20 (IPR): The Directorate of Handicrafts and Handloom Gangtok, Government of Sikkim successfully conducted Skill Up-Gradation Training Programme on Cutting and Stitching under the Raising and Accelerating MSME Performance (RAMP) Scheme at the Apparel and Garment Manufacturing Unit, Barfok in Gyalshing District.
The valedictory programme was attended by the Director, Directorate of Handicrafts and Handloom  Gangtok, Mr Tshering Topgay Bhutia as the Chief Guest accompanied by Deputy Director DHH Gangtok Ms Poonam Khatiwada, Assistant Director DHH Gyalshing Ms Nim Lahmu Lepcha, Inspector DHH Gyalshing Mr Sanjay Chettri,  Founder and Director of Indus Institute of Information Management (IIIM) Kolkata Mr Kushal Mitra,  Executive Director IIIM Kolkata Mr Atanu Das, officials, trainers, staff members and trainees.
The training programme benefitted sixty participants from the first and second batches, who received hands-on training in cutting, stitching and garment construction. The initiative was aimed at enhancing employable skills and creating opportunities for self-reliance and income generation.
Addressing the gathering, Mr Bhutia congratulated the trainees for successfully completing the programme and encouraged them to utilise the skills acquired during the training to build sustainable livelihoods. He emphasised that skill-based training plays a crucial role in creating employment opportunities and strengthening the local economy.
Mr Bhutia also expressed his appreciation to Advisor-cum-Area MLA of Gyalshing-Bernyak Constituency, Mr L. N. Sharma, for his continued support towards developmental initiatives and for ensuring that such opportunities reach the people at the grassroots level.
Highlighting the inclusive nature of the training programme, Mr Bhutia stated that it provided a platform for both experienced and aspiring trainees to enhance their capabilities. While skilled participants were able to upgrade their knowledge, newcomers gained valuable exposure and practical experience in the field.
The Chief Guest further remarked that the Apparel and Garment Manufacturing Unit at Barfok has emerged as an important centre for skill development and textile production in the district. He expressed confidence that the trainees would make meaningful contributions to the handicrafts and handloom sector and explore entrepreneurial opportunities in the future.
Speaking on the importance of practical skills in today’s changing world, Mr Bhutia observed that while technology and Artificial Intelligence continue to reshape workplaces, craftsmanship and hands-on expertise remain highly relevant. He stressed the need to build a skilled workforce capable of contributing to the growth and sustainability of the sector.
Certificates were distributed to the trainees upon successful completion of the training. Trainees during the open house discussion shared their appreciation for the opportunity, stating that the training had not only equipped them with new skills but had also boosted their confidence and opened new avenues for employment and self-employment.
The programme reflects the State Government’s continued commitment to nurturing local talent, promoting entrepreneurship and creating sustainable livelihood opportunities through targeted skill development initiatives under the RAMP Scheme.
Earlier, the Chief Guest and other dignitaries were felicitated with tokens of appreciation in recognition of their support and contribution towards the successful implementation of the programme.
