Skill Training Initiative for Rural Youth in Pakyong District
Pakyong, 16 September (IPR): A week-long Skill Training for Rural Youth on Tea Plantation was inaugurated at Linkey Parakha GPK, Pakyong today. This initiative, organised by ATMA in collaboration with the Agriculture and Horticulture Department and the Parakha Tea Growers Welfare Board, was sponsored by MANAGE Hyderabad.
The training course aims to equip rural youth with essential skills, enhancing their employability and capacity to contribute to local agricultural practices.
The programme had a series of addresses from distinguished guests highlighted the importance of skill development in the agricultural sector and reinforced the significance of such training for the prosperity of local farmers and their communities.
Each speaker emphasised the relevance of the training, encouraging participants to take full advantage of the resources available to them.
Likewise, an Awareness and Plantation Programme titled "Ek Ped Maa ka Naam" under the Plant4Mother Campaign was simultaneously held at Linkey GPK in Parakha Block, Pakyong.
This initiative was also organised by the Agriculture Technology Management Agency (ATMA) of Pakyong District, in collaboration with the Agriculture and Horticulture Department of Pakyong district.
During her address, Mrs Rebecca Gurung, Deputy Director cum Deputy Project Director, ATMA elaborated on objectives of the Plant4Mother campaign.
This tree-planting initiative was launched by India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi on World Environment Day in June 2024, marking a step towards combating environmental degradation. The goal is to plant 800 million trees by September 2024 and 1.4 billion trees by March 2025.
The campaign is multi-faceted, encompassing several essential goals. One of its primary aims is to pay tribute to mothers universally, encouraging individuals to plant trees in honour of their mothers and, by extension, to acknowledge Mother Earth herself.
Furthermore, the campaign supports the government's Mission LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment), which advocates for an environmentally sustainable lifestyle.
This alignment signifies a strategic effort to cultivate environmental awareness among citizens. In an age where climate-related challenges are increasingly threatening our ecosystems, the Plant4Mother campaign aims to address pressing concerns such as desertification and land degradation.
Given that women are often more vulnerable to climate change’s adverse effects, this initiative particularly targets their empowerment, underscoring the connection between environmental justice and social equity.
In the latter part of the event, the awareness programme transitioned to practical action as participants engaged in the plantation of saplings. This hands-on experience allowed attendees to apply their newfound knowledge and contribute physically to the campaign's goals, effectively blending education with action.
The event was graced by the presence of several dignitaries, including Ms Chandra Kala Chettri, Panchayat President; Mr Kamal Kumar Kafley, President of Tea Growers Welfare Board; along with Mr Hari Neopaney, General Secretary of the board; and Mr Sonam Topden Bhutia, Vice President; and Mr Tshering Chophel Bhutia, Additional Director cum Project Director of ATMA along with officials from the department.
