Soreng, August 23 (IPR): The Sirijunga Yakthung Sakthim Phojumbho (Sirijunga Limbu Cultural Society), Tharpu, Soreng, celebrated its 46th Foundation Day today with a series of cultural and literary programmes at Tharpu.
The programme was graced by Minister for Buildings & Housing and Labour Department, Mr Bhim Hang Limboo, as the chief guest, along with the Member of Parliament (Lok Sabha), Mr Indra Hang Subba, MLA, Soreng-Chakung Constituency, Mr Aditya Tamang (Golay) and MLA, Maneybong-Dentam, Mr Sudesh Kumar Subba, as guests of honour.
The programme commenced with the ceremonial welcome of the chief guest and distinguished guests, followed by the lighting of the ceremonial lamp.
Minister for Buildings & Housing and Labour Department Mr Bhim Hang Limboo, congratulated the organisers and highlighted the Government’s commitment to completing the ongoing project in phases. Emphasising Sikkim’s diverse social and cultural fabric, he said the Government believes that politics should not be mixed with community affairs. He highlighted the importance of supporting all communities in preserving their language, culture and traditions, irrespective of political affiliation.
He highlighted the government’s effort to promote and develop various cultural infrastructure, giving examples of the construction of Yakthung-Him and Manghim at Singtam and the construction of a community centre equipped with halls, a research centre, library and guest house at Hee-gaon, Chayatal, which is near it completion. He also mentioned similar initiatives being undertaken across the State, including the proposed Manghim at Mangsila.
Intimating that the Government’s development initiatives were not limited to any particular community and that genuine demands from different communities have been taken up. He also highlighted efforts to promote Bhutia, Lepcha and Limbu languages up to the PhD level, for which he intimated gratitude to the Chief Minister, Mr Prem Singh Tamang.
Speaking on Soreng’s development, the Minister said the creation of Soreng district was a major milestone that would bring greater access to healthcare, government offices and economic opportunities. He noted that the nearly completed district hospital would reduce the need for patients to travel to Geyzing or Namchi, while the establishment of government offices would create local opportunities for farmers, businesses and residents.
He urged the people to recognise the long term benefits of having their own district and appreciated the active participation of the people of Soreng. He concluded by congratulating the executive members, youth and leadership of the organisation and extending his best wishes for its continued progress.
Earlier, MLA Soreng-Chakung Mr Aditya Tamang (Golay), addressing the 46th Foundation Day celebration of Sirijunga Yakthung Sakthim Phojumbho, congratulated the organising committee for conducting a brief and meaningful district-level programme.
He acknowledged the contributions of all those who have helped strengthen the institution over the years and emphasised the need to develop it as a self-sustaining asset. He said the revenue generated from the asset should be responsibly managed and built into a treasury so that future generations can benefit from it without having to depend on external assistance for organising programmes.
He also stressed that the institution’s focus should extend beyond annual celebrations to the preservation and promotion of the Limbu community’s language, culture, history and heritage. He called for a clear blueprint for conducting workshops, training programmes and cultural activities involving people from across the district.
Appreciating the committee for keeping the programme short and focused, he urged future programmes to remain “short, meaningful and to the point,” stressing the importance of respecting the time of guests and community members.
In conclusion, he expressed gratitude to the Chief Minister for his continued support towards the development of Soreng district and Sikkim, and thanked the Chief Guest and other dignitaries for attending the programme.
A welcome address was delivered by Mr Suk Raj Subba, Coordinator of Sirijunga Yakthung Sakthim Phojumbho, who extended greetings and gratitude to the Chief Guest, distinguished guests and all participants for gracing the 46th Foundation Day celebration.
Briefing the gathering, he highlighted the Society’s journey since its establishment and its continued efforts towards preserving and promoting Limbu language, culture, traditions and heritage. In conclusion, he thanked all those present for their support and participation in the celebration.
The occasion witnessed the release of a book by Mr Asit Limbu and the felicitation of individuals in recognition of their participation in Mangsewa Salmo (Prayer Song), song, dance and cultural performances which highlighted their contributions towards the promotion and preservation of Limboo culture.
It also highlighted the importance of preserving and promoting the language, culture and heritage of the Limboo community, while showcasing its rich traditions through traditional songs, dances and cultural presentations. The event underscored the Government’s continued efforts towards strengthening community institutions and cultural centres, contributing to Sikkim’s diverse multicultural identity.
Also present were former MLA Mrs Chandra Maya Subba, Advisor, IPRD, Mr SB Subba, Chairperson, Capacity Building & Skill Development Board, Mrs Mingma Lamhu Sherpa, Mr PK Subba of the Sikkim Scheduled Tribe Welfare Board, ADC (Development) Mr Ongdi Sherpa,  former Special Secretary, Food & Civil Supplies Department, Mr DB Rawat, APS (Soreng) Mr Eras Lepcha, officers and officials of various line departments and members of the public.
