Sikkim Slam 3x3 Kicks Off on a Strong Note
Gangtok, March 27 (IPR): The inaugural programme of Sikkim Slam 3x3 was held this morning at the Basketball Court of Paljor Stadium.
Organised by the District Administrative Centre, Gangtok, and the Gangtok District Police, in association with Freedom Rehabilitation Facility and Ravens Basketball Club, and powered by Sikkim INSPIRES, the tournament marks the first-of-its-kind 3x3 basketball event in the State. The fast-paced format, played on a half-court with three players on each side, is designed to be both engaging and competitive, with matches decided either within a 10-minute duration or when a team reaches 21 points.
The inaugural match was attended by MLA Rinchenpong, Mr Erung Tenzing Lepcha, as the Chief Guest. Also present on the occasion were Chief Patron, MLA, Soreng-Chakung, Mr Aditya Golay, District Collector, Gangtok, Mr Tushar G Nikhare, and Additional Political Secretary to the Chief Minister, Mr Tshering Wangchuk Lepcha, among other dignitaries.
In his address, Chief Guest, Mr Erung Tenzing Lepcha, expressed gratitude to the organisers and highlighted Sikkim’s steady emergence as a hub for sporting excellence. He emphasised the collective vision of nurturing local talent to excel at national and international levels and reiterated continued support towards the development of sports in the State.
The tournament commenced with a ceremonial line-up of participating teams, followed by the dignitaries taking the inaugural shots.
A total of 24 men’s teams and 10 women’s teams from Nepal and various parts of India are participating in the tournament.
The finals are scheduled for March 29, 2026.
The prize pool includes Rs 2 lakh and Rs 1 lakh for the men’s winner and runner-up, and Rs 1 lakh and Rs 50,000 for the women’s category. Additionally, 10 award categories featuring cash prizes and gift hampers from sponsors, including Temi Tea, Sikkim Supreme, and Rachna Bookstore, have been instituted.
The programme was also attended by the Managing Director, Temi Tea, Ms Radha Pradhan, Managing Director, GFPF (Sikkim Supreme), Ms Chanda Rani Rai, Sub-Divisional Police Officer, Gangtok, Mr Mingyur Tempo Nadik, Mr Karma Chewang Nima of Freedom Rehabilitation Centre, Chief Engineer, PHE Department, Mr Sonam Wangdi, along with other distinguished guests.
The welcome address was delivered by the Tournament Secretary, Mr Paljor Rilon Wangdi.
