Sikkim Paryavaran Parva 2024’ flagged off by Minister, Forest and Environment Department
Gangtok, July 1 (IPR): A flag-off event signaling the start of ‘Sikkim Paryavaran Parva 2024’ was held at the premises of Himalayan Zoological Park this morning.
The event commenced with the flagging off of the Green Ride by the Chief Guest, Mr Pintso Namgyal Lepcha, Minister of the Forest and Environment Department.
Sikkim Paryavaran Parva is observed for 14 days from July 1 to July 14. The theme this year is "Leave a Green Legacy.”
Organised by the Forest and Environment Department, the event also had the presence of Dr Pradeep Kumar, Secretary of the Forest and Environment Department, Dr Sandeep Tambe, Secretary, of the Science and Technology Department, other dignitaries along with officials and staff of the Forest and Environment Department.
The day's activities included cycling, Zumba, Green walkathon, Mastermen 10km run (for 45 plus years), and Greenathon where the Minister himself participated.
The following event winners were handed mementos and a cash prize by the Minister and the dignitaries.
10 km run(men):
1st- Jaswant Saroj
2nd- Rewaj Chettri
3rd-Vivek Chettri
10 km run(women):
1st- Anjali Subha
2nd-Vandana Patel
3rd- Bandana Subba
Mastermen run (45+ years):
1st- Subarna Subba
2nd- Kushal Dewan
3rd- Sher Bahadur Chettri
Cycling (3km):
1st-Anju Sherpa
2nd- Ganesh Parsai
3rd- Gyalsten Tandup Sherpa
4th- Nibesh
5th- Salma Raju
The consolation prize was awarded to the youngest cyclist, 12-year-old Karma Pintso Chopel Bhutia. Further, mementos were also presented to all the participants.
In addition to the physical activities, a signature campaign was conducted to garner support for environmental conservation efforts. Participants were encouraged to pledge their commitment to adopting sustainable practices and protecting the environment. The campaign aimed to raise awareness about the importance of individual actions in contributing to a larger environmental movement.
Earlier, Dr Pradeep Kumar, Secretary, the Forest and Environment Department administered the pledge to the participants.
The event concluded with a Vote of thanks proposed by Dr Manjunath, Chief Conservator(CCF) of the Forest and Environment Department.
