Sikkim Marks Gandhi Jayanti with Awards for Cleanliness and Community Service

Gangtok, October 2 (IPR): On the occasion of the 156th Gandhi Jayanti, Governor Mr Om Prakash Mathur, and Chief Minister Mr Prem Singh Tamang paid tribute to Mahatma Gandhi, the Father of the Nation, at MG Marg Gangtok, today.
In attendance were key dignitaries including the Member of Parliament Lok Sabha Mr Indra Hang Subba, Cabinet Ministers, MLAs, Political Secretary to HCM Mr Jakob Khaling, Advisors, Chairpersons,Adhakshya and Upa Adhakshya of Gangtok, the Mayor and Deputy Mayor, Councillors GMC, distinguished guests along with Heads of Departments from various departments, OSDs, Additional Political Secretary Gangtok District and officers and officials of the state government.
The ceremony, accompanied by devotional bhajans and the National Anthem, reflected the State’s homage to the Father of the Nation and his enduring values of truth, non-violence, and service to humanity.
Alongside the commemorative programme, the day also witnessed the presentation of awards under the ENGAGE 2025 initiative and the Swachhata Awards, recognising students, institutions, self-help groups, sanitation workers, and local bodies for their outstanding contributions to waste management, cleanliness, and community service.
ENGAGE 2025 is a flagship awareness programme on waste management designed to nurture youth leadership, felicitated winners of inter-school and inter-college competitions, inspiring Youth Participation organised by Urban Development Department in collaboration with 24hrs Inspired.
The awardees for various categories under ENGAGE 2025 were as under:
Inter-School Waste Management Household Survey Competition
1. Kyongsa Girls’ Government Senior Secondary School, Gyalshing
2. PM Shri Deorali Government Girls’ Senior Secondary School, Gangtok
3. Enchey Government Senior Secondary School, Gangtok
Inter-College Video-Making Competition
1. Loyola College of Education, Namchi
2. Sikkim Government Burtuk College, Gangtok
3. Sikkim Professional University, Tadong
Inter-School Video-Making Competition
1. PM Shri Deorali Government Girls’ Senior Secondary School, Gangtok
2. Modern Senior Secondary School, Gangtok
3. PM Shri Government Senior Secondary School, Singtam
All winners received trophies and certificates in recognition of their creativity and innovative approaches.
Swachhata Awards – Honouring Service and Dedication
The Swachhata Awards 2025 honoured individuals, SHGs, wards, and urban local bodies for their remarkable work in promoting sustainable practices and maintaining cleanliness.
The awardees for various categories under Swachhata Awards 2025 were as under:
Best Performing Safai Mitras 2025: Ten sanitation workers from seven Urban Local Bodies received ₹10,000 each along with certificates:

3. Ms Tara Pradhan – Singtam Nagar Panchayat

Best Performing SHG under Swachhata Sahar Abhiyaan was accorded to Sanskar SHG, Deorali, Gangtok with a cash prize of ₹50,000 & Certificate.
Cleanest Wards under Gangtok Municipal Corporation (Joint Winners)
• Chandmari Ward – ₹50,000 + Certificate
• Lower MG Marg Ward – ₹50,000 + Certificate
Cleanest Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) in Sikkim
1. Rangpo Nagar Panchayat – ₹8 lakh + Certificate
2. Singtam Nagar Panchayat – ₹6 lakh + Certificate
3. Nayabazar-Jorethang Nagar Panchayat – ₹4 lakh + Certificate
Mentor City Award
Mangan Nagar Panchayat was awarded a Citation & ₹5 lakh.
(Mangan, having secured the Cleanest ULB Award consecutively from 2022 to 2024, now assumes the role of guiding other ULBs under this newly instituted category.)
Cleanest Gram Panchayat Unit Ward Awards 2025 under Rural Development Department
• 1st Prize (₹5 lakh): Gerethang Labing GPU, Chongrang Block, Gyalshing District
• 2nd Prize (₹3 lakh): Lingtam Padamchen GPU, Regu Block, Pakyong District
• 3rd Prize (₹1 lakh each)Joint winners: Rongay Tathangchen GPU, Nandok Block, Gangtok District & Poklok GPU, Nandugoan Block, Namchi District.
Swachhata Mitra 2025 – Individual Honours: The Best Performing Swachhata Mitra 2025 awards were conferred upon sanitation workers from the Gangtok Sewerage Division for their dedicated service under Public Health Engineering Department:

The day’s proceedings concluded with the National Anthem, symbolising the State’s collective pledge to uphold Gandhiji’s ideals of truth, non-violence, and cleanliness. By recognising the contributions of schools, colleges, SHGs, ULBs, wards, and sanitation workers alike, the awards underscored the shared responsibility of every citizen in building a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable Sikkim.
