Date: 21-Aug-2025
Gangtok, Aug 21 (IPR):
The Time Capsule 2025–2075, a 32-kg rose-gold cylinder symbolically designed as a “Message for the Future” and crafted from 316L surgical-grade stainless steel, was sealed and buried this morning at the Rustomji Deer Park, Tashiling Secretariat premises, for its 50-year journey through time.
In the historic event organised by the Information and Public Relations Department (IPRD), Government of Sikkim marking 50 years of Sikkim's Statehood, Chief Minister Mr Prem Singh Tamang performed the final sealing and burial of the capsule at the designated site in the presence of Speaker, Sikkim Legislative Assembly, Mr Mingma N Sherpa, Cabinet Ministers, MLAs, Deputy Mayor, GMC, Advisors and Chairpersons.
Participating in the ceremony were Chief Secretary, Mr R Telang, Director General of Police, Mr Akshay Sachdeva, Principal Secretaries, Secretaries, senior officials and staff from various departments.
The Time Capsule will remain sealed until May 16, 2075, when it will be opened on the historic occasion of the 100th anniversary of Sikkim’s Statehood.
Addressing the gathering, Chief Minister Mr Prem Singh Tamang described the sealing of the Time Capsule 2025-2075 as a landmark moment in the history of Sikkim and praised the IPR Department for conceptualising and bringing the project to life.
Stating that the state’s cultural heritage, customs, and developmental achievements have been meticulously preserved for future generations in the capsule by the department, he extended appreciation for the contributions from various communities, citizens, educational institutions, and government agencies.
When the capsule is opened in 2075, he said, he hopes the tale of Sikkim's tenacity, development, and solidarity will motivate future generations.
Following his address, the Chief Minister proceeded to ceremonially seal and bury the Time Capsule at the designated site, witnessed by dignitaries, officials, and guests.
Earlier in her welcome address, Secretary IPRD, Ms Annapurna Alley, traced the journey of the Time Capsule project from its inception to its execution, describing it as a “letter to the future” filled with physical and digital memories, trinkets, relics, and a repository of voices and visions from 2025.
Ms Alley thanked the Chief Minister, who also serves as the Minister-in-Charge of IPRD, for guiding this project with his personal vision and touch. It was under his encouragement and leadership that this project took shape, and by ceremonially sealing the capsule today, he has made this moment a true milestone in the state’s history, she added.
She further extended gratitude for the diverse submissions received from government departments, institutions, schools, communities, and over 500 citizens, thus leaving an enduring legacy for future leaders, communities, and children to cherish and draw inspiration from.
The vote of thanks was proposed by Additional Secretary IPRD, Ms Anita Subba.
It may be recalled that on May 16, 2025, during the State Day celebrations, Governor Mr Om Prakash Mathur and the Chief Minister launched the Time Capsule 2025-2075, a landmark project of the IPR Department, giving it the ceremonial and symbolic beginning.
Following this, the department received an extraordinary collection of memories, artefacts, letters, and dreams from citizens, government departments, communities, schools, and leaders of the state. These submissions, in both physical and digital forms, were meticulously curated by the department to be sealed in the capsule, creating a bridge between today and the Sikkim of the next fifty years.
It may be noted here that a public display of the replica of the Time Capsule is stationed at MG Marg, encased in a transparent glass, allowing visitors to glimpse at its contents and understand the symbolism between the past and future.
