Short Term Course on Journalism for Sikkim's Budding Journalists Concludes successfully

Gangtok, September 15 (IPR): The Lok Sabha Member of Parliament Dr Indra Hang Subba, Dr Mangaljit Rai, Chairman of Sikkim Cooperative Union (SICUN), and Mrs Annapurna Alley, Secretary, Information and Public Relations Department attended the Panel Discussion organised by the Press Club of Sikkim (PCS) during the Valedictory Function to mark the final day of the three-day training session on ‘Short Term Course on Journalism’ at the conference hall of Sikkim Cooperative Union (SICUN) in Assam Lingzey, Pakyong District today.
The Panelists for the day were Dr Mrinal Chatterjee, Regional Director of Indian Institute of Mass Communication, Odisha, Dr Harka Bahadur Chettri, Writer and Columnist from West Bengal, Mr Puran Tamang, Editor and Publisher of Summit Times and Mr Pema Wangchuk Dorjee, Consulting Editor of Summit Times.
Congratulating PCS and the 38 Budding Journalists who successfully completed the productive workshop, MP Subba valided the important role of the fourth pillar of the democracy in building the state and the nation. He stressed that the state government has been working towards creating an environment conducive to healthy, vibrant, and independent journalism in the state. To materalise this effort of the state government, he requested PCS to organise such workshops on a regular basis assuring setting up of a TED Talk Studio in the premise of the Press Club at Metro Point, Tadong from the MP Fund.
Emphasizing that journalism can contribute significantly to the betterment of society and community, Dr Mangaljit Rai, Chairman of SICUN assured full support on behalf of SICUN for the growth of journalism in Sikkim and to PCS.
Mrs Annapurna Alley, Secretary, Information and Public Relations Department conveyed the congratulatory message from the Chief Minister, Mr Prem Singh Tamang-Golay to PCS for the completion of such an innovative workshop for the young working journalists within the state bearing the hallmark of the Indian Institute of Mass Communication, Odisha. Mrs Alley appraised about the initiative of the state government for the welfare of working journalists by way of grand-in-aid for retirement benefits and health insurance. Stating that the Department and PCS has been working in togetherness for the development of ethical print and digital journalism, she added that it will be a continuous endeavour as discussions are underway for a Media Symposium to celebrate the 50th Year of Statehood.
The Valedictory Function also saw the release of the book "Understanding Media in New Normal Times" authored by Dr Mrinal Chatterjee. Attributing the book to Dr Pradeep Mahapatra, an academician turned media analyst from Odisha, he conveyed that it will help the journalists in understanding journalism better. Dr Chatterjee applauded PCS for the comprehensible short-term Media Course and looked forward to more collaborations in future.
Mr Bhim Rawat, President of PCS acknowledged the support of all the executive members of PCS, the Special Guests, Panelists, and all the participants for making the event fruitful.
