Secretary (School Education) Leads Comprehensive Academic Review in Mangan District
Mangan, September 24, 2026: In a major push towards elevating educational standards and nurturing holistic student development, Shri Tashi Chophel, Secretary (School Education), Education Department, Government of Sikkim, spearheaded an extensive two-day Academic Review and Monitoring Visit across Mangan District on September 23–24, 2026. He was accompanied by a team of officers of the Education Department, comprising Shri Ambar Das Chhetri, Director, Samagra Shiksha, Textbook and Language, Shri Digvijay Basnet, Deputy Director, Samagra Shiksha, Shri Rajiv Philip, Deputy Director, SCERT, along with the District and Block Education Officers, BRCCs and CRCCs. The visit focused on assessing learning outcomes, reviewing school infrastructure and strengthening the effective implementation of educational programmes at the grassroots level.
Over the two-day visit covering schools across Kabi, Mangan and Passingdong Blocks, the team engaged in meaningful dialogue with Heads of Institutions, teachers, students, Panchayat representatives, School Management Committees (SMCs) and stakeholders. The officers observed classroom teaching-learning processes and assessed foundational learning, with particular focus on language literacy, reading, writing, numerical proficiency and expressive communication skills.
The team commended the schools for integrating activity-based learning, continuous Foundational Literacy and Numeracy (FLN) practices and innovative pedagogical approaches designed to stimulate curiosity, build confidence and strengthen core academic competencies among young learners.
The implementation of various government educational programmes, schemes and welfare initiatives was also reviewed. The officers observed that several initiatives are being effectively implemented at the grassroots level, reflecting positive coordination among school administrators, local Panchayats, SMCs and other stakeholders.
A standout highlight of the visit was Government Primary School, Manzing, Upper Dzongu. The team appreciated the effective functioning of its residential facility under the Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Awasya Vidhayala, which serves as an important means of ensuring educational accessibility for students from remote areas by providing regular access to schooling, a structured study environment and holistic academic support.
The Secretary (School Education) assured support for further enhancement and strengthening of the hostel infrastructure at Government Primary School, Manzing, recognising its important role in supporting students and promoting better educational outcomes. A total of ten residential facilities are being run across the district under this initiative, providing valuable support to students, particularly those from remote and difficult-to-reach areas.
Across the schools inspected, school infrastructure and residential facilities were observed to be well maintained, hygienic and conducive for teaching and learning. The initiatives undertaken by schools were appreciated, and teachers and school leadership were encouraged to sustain their efforts and continue striving for improved learning outcomes and holistic student development.
The visiting officers provided actionable academic inputs and pedagogical guidance to teachers and school leadership, reinforcing the Education Department’s commitment to capacity building, inclusive education, effective classroom practices and improved learning outcomes.
