Second Convocation Ceremony of Medhavi Skills University Held in Gangtok
Gangtok, February 25 (IPR): The second convocation of Medhavi Skills University was held at Manan Kendra in Gangtok today. The event was graced by Chairperson, Public Accounts Committee-cum-MLA, Mr Sonam Tshering Venchungpa, as the Chief Guest.
The ceremony commenced with a formal academic procession and declaration of the opening of the convocation. The convocation report was presented by Pro Vice Chancellor Dr Ashwini Kumar, highlighting the university’s academic achievements and institutional progress.
Addressing the gathering, Chief Guest Mr Sonam T. Venchungpa congratulated the graduating students and described the convocation as an important milestone in their academic and personal journey. He noted that young graduates today are entering a rapidly changing world marked by constant disruptions and urged them to embrace change, innovation, and new opportunities.
Sharing insights from history and global developments, he emphasised that progress often emerges from challenges and encouraged students to continuously learn, unlearn, and adapt to evolving circumstances. He also stressed the importance of moral values and integrity, stating that knowledge must be guided by a strong ethical foundation to contribute positively to society.
Encouraging students, particularly from Sikkim, to explore opportunities beyond their comfort zones, he urged them to expand their horizons, gain global exposure, and bring back knowledge and experience for the development of the State and the nation. He concluded by advising graduates to remain adaptable, uphold strong values, and strive for excellence in their chosen fields, while expressing appreciation to parents and faculty members for their role in shaping the students’ future.
During the ceremony, the university conferred the Doctor of Literature (D.Litt.) Honoris Causa upon Major General Jai Singh Bainsla, SM, Additional Director General of Assam Rifles, and Mr Raj Kumar Yadav, Commissioner-cum-Secretary, Women, Child, Senior Citizen and Divyangjan Welfare Department, Government of Sikkim.
Major General Jai Singh Bainsla, SM, expressed gratitude while accepting the honorary Doctor of Literature (D.Litt.), describing the honour as a tribute to the men and women in uniform who dedicate their lives to national service. Reflecting on his 36 years of service in the Indian Army and Assam Rifles, he emphasised that success comes from a combination of competence and character.
Highlighting the importance of skill-based education, he noted that academic qualifications must be supported by practical skills, innovation, and real-world application to contribute to nation-building. Addressing the graduates, he urged them to uphold discipline, resilience, and integrity, stating that while skills create opportunities, character earns respect and service gives purpose. He also encouraged students to develop strong communication and interpersonal skills to enhance their professional growth and wished them success in their careers.
In his address, Chancellor, MSU, Mr Pravesh Dudani, Founder and Chancellor of Medhavi Skills University, welcomed distinguished guests, government officials, industry partners, faculty members, parents, and graduating students to the university’s second convocation ceremony, describing the occasion as a historic milestone in the institution’s journey.
Congratulating the graduating students, he acknowledged the role of parents and faculty in their achievements and expressed gratitude to industry partners and the Government of Sikkim for their continued support. He informed that the university was established in 2021 with a vision to deliver industry-relevant, skill-integrated education that empowers youth with practical knowledge and values required for the future.
Highlighting the university’s growth, he stated that its work-integrated education model, strong industry collaborations, and focus on employability have enabled students to gain real-world experience, secure placements, and excel in national and international skill competitions. He emphasised that the future belongs to those who combine skills with values and contribute meaningfully to society and nation-building.
Pro Chancellor of Medhavi Skills University, Mr Kuldip Sarma, described the occasion as a moment of pride for the institution and the State. He acknowledged the Government of Sikkim and various departments for their continued guidance in promoting skill-based education and youth empowerment and highlighted the importance of the National Education Policy 2020 in creating industry-ready and employable youth through practical, skill-oriented learning.
He stated that the university is committed to strengthening India’s skilled workforce and preparing students to compete globally, including opportunities for overseas employment, and encouraged the graduates to become responsible citizens and valuable assets to society.
During the ceremony, achievers of WorldSkills Asia and IndiaSkills regional competitions were honoured, followed by the conferral of degrees upon successful candidates. Twelve gold medals were also presented to outstanding graduates from various courses.
The event also included a strategic Memorandum of Understanding exchange with industry partners, reinforcing the university’s commitment to industry-academia collaboration. Participating companies included Nephroplus, Dhoot Transmission Ltd, CNH Industrial Pvt Ltd, Nextstep Education and Skill Service, Talent Corp Solutions Pvt Ltd, GKN Automotive, Redversity, and EMversity.
The ceremony concluded with a pledge by degree recipients, a vote of thanks, a declaration of the closing of the convocation, and the singing of the National Anthem.
