Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute conducts a workshop on Storytelling through Film Editing

Gangtok, March 20 (IPR): On the second day of the Sikkim International Film Festival 2026, a workshop by the Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute (SRFTI), Kolkata, on ‘Storytelling through Film Editing,’ was held at Chintan Bhawan today.
The session featured  Editor and Filmmaker Mr Sankhajit Biswas, Cinematographer Mr Indrajeet Mukherjee, and Cinematographer and Colourist Mr Keshav Manna.
SRFTI, Kolkata, is a premier film institute offering MFA programmes across Film and Electronic and Digital Media wings, with specialised training in direction, cinematography, editing, sound, writing, and production, including documentary filmmaking.
Mr Sankhajit Biswas, during the session, highlighted the significance of storytelling in cinema as a powerful tool for emotional and psychological engagement. He emphasised that cinema, experienced collectively in theatres, enables audiences to move beyond personal struggles and emerge from phases of negativity and emotional distress. Through storytelling, films provide a sense of liberation, helping individuals process complex emotions and gain perspective.
He further underscored that films, particularly documentaries, play an important role in expanding knowledge and awareness. By presenting diverse human experiences and realities, storytelling in cinema contributes to a deeper understanding of psychology, society, and human behaviour.
Additionally, he elaborated on a film titled Lifeline by Victor Erice wherein he reflected on the essence of the film and presented an analysis of the film. He further highlighted the visual and sound image of the short film, explained different shots and highlighted that the film also signifies the passage of time.
The workshop also witnessed the screening of two short films, ‘Tungrus and His Pet Chicken from Hell’ by Mr Rishi Chandna, and  ‘Lifeline’ by Mr Victor Erice and an interactive session.
