SICUN Celebrates 23 Years of Empowering Cooperative Communities
Pakyong, April 02 (IPR): The Sikkim State Cooperative Union (SICUN) celebrated its 23rd Foundation Day at the conference hall of SICUN, Assam Lingzey today.
Minister of Education Department , Sports & Youth Affairs Department, Law Department and Parliamentary Affairs Department, Mr Raju Basnet, graced the occasion as the distinguished Chief Guest, alongside Chairman OBC Commission, Ms Pavitra Bhandari and DGP, Mr Akshay Sachdeva, as the Guest of Honour.
Minister of Education Department , Sports & Youth Affairs Department, Law Department and Parliamentary Affairs Department, Mr Raju Basnet, congratulated the institution on its 23rd Foundation Day and highlighted the importance of strengthening the cooperative movement for socio-economic development in his address.
He encouraged the participants to contribute to the movement’s growth and change the rural landscape with a cooperative ecosystem, further assuring them to provide necessary assistance to uplift the cooperative movement in the region.
Chairman of the OBC Commission, Ms Pavitra Bhandari, commended the institution's efforts in educating and training various cooperatives across different sectors. She further also offered suggestions to empower Self-Help Group (SHG) members through awareness programmes, business promotions, and capacity-building initiatives.
Emphasising developing essential life skills and personality development, Director General of Police Mr Akshay Sachdeva advised incorporating healthy habits and prioritising physical activities for overall well-being. He also stressed cultivating spirituality, such as meditation or mindfulness, to develop resilience and lead a life with positivity. In addition, he encouraged building emotional health and intelligence and contributing to the betterment of society.
Sharing a brief background on the establishment of SICUN, Chairman of SICUN, Dr Mangal Jit Rai, emphasised the objectives and accomplishments of the institution and informed that SICUN aims to create a platform to bridge the rural-urban gap while creating opportunities for income generation through educational and capacity-building training for the cooperative community.
Further, Dr Rai also acknowledged the contribution of SICUN's founder, Mr Nakul Das Rai, in establishing the institution and driving the mission of strengthening the cooperative movement.
Additionally, Registrar, Cooperation Department, Ms Karma Ongmu, acknowledged the role of SICUN as a human resource firm, providing training to various cooperative societies. She congratulated SICUN on launching its e-commerce portal, which will facilitate the marketing of the cooperative produce of various societies. In addition, she highlighted the theme of the International Year of Cooperatives 2025, "Cooperatives Build a Better World, and encouraged working collectively to promote the initiative.
CEO SICUN, Mr Phadung Bhutia, highlighted the significance of the foundation day and its alignment with the International Year of Cooperatives 2025 and presented brief information on the institution's activities and initiatives. He further added that SICUN was established with the objective of empowering cooperative communities through training and educational programmes.
During the event, the following officials from the Cooperation Department were felicitated in recognition of their hard work and dedication.
