SHGs Trained on Waste Management Best Practices under Swachh Sahar Abhiyaan
Gangtok, December 6 (IPR): The Swachh Bharat Mission (Urban) under Urban Development Department (UDD) conducted a day long programme on ‘Waste Management Practises’ for Self Help Groups (SHGs) of Gangtok under Swachh Sahar Abhiyan at the State Panchayat Resource Centre (GMC Building), Deorali today.
The programme was graced by Minister of Urban Development and Food & Civil Supplies Departments, Mr Bhoj Raj Rai as the chief guest and Advisor of Urban Development and Food & Civil Supplies Departments, Mr Delay Namgyal Barfungpa as the Guest of Honour. The event also had the presence of Commissioner cum Secretary UDD, Mr Jitendra Singh Raje; Secretary UDD, Ms Yogeeta Rai; Deputy Mayor of Gangtok Municipal Corporation (GMC), Ms Tshering Palden Bhutia; senior officers; representatives of SHGs; and other dignitaries.
The chief guest stressed the importance of collective effort in maintaining cleanliness, noting that laws alone are insufficient without individual contributions. He advised on waste segregation and recognised the hard work of sanitation workers. The cleanest ward will receive a prize, initially Rs 50,000, which will increase later. He encouraged Self-Help Groups (SHGs) to guide communities, promising government support. He emphasised the need for SHGs to adapt to current trends and equip the next generation with technical knowledge. Finally, he reiterated the pledge to treat daughters and sons equally.
Mr Jitendra Singh Raje in his address highlighted Sikkim's cleanliness, crediting Self-Help Groups (SHGs) for their contributions. He noted that the government supports financial inclusion for SHGs through the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, launched by the Chief Minister. Mr Raje expressed gratitude to SHGs for their tireless efforts in collecting garbage, often late into the night. He encouraged collective efforts to recycle and segregate waste, acknowledging that source segregation remains a challenge. To address this, SHGs' assistance is crucial, and a third-party initiative is underway to enhance waste management segregation.
The Chief Guest then presented dummy cheques to four new SHGs registered under GMC, namely United SHG, Koshish SHG, Lakshya SHG, and Adarsh SHG, providing them with Rs. 25,000/- as their first installment, with each group set to receive Rs 1 lakh in a year.
The first training session conducted by Mr R B Bhandari, Mission Commissioner-GMC, focused on issues and the current scenario faced by the GMC in waste management, with the objective of reducing, reusing, recycling, and reusing, achieving zero waste and zero landfill.
The second training session was conducted by Ms Jerusha Joy Shrestha, Joint Secretary SBM UDD, conducted a session on Solid Waste Management Rules 2016 and Plastic Waste Management Rules 2016.
Additionally Ms Priyadarshini Shrestha, Consultant SBM (Grameen)- Rural Development Department (RDD) and member of Zero Waste Himalaya, discussed the issues surrounding overconsumption and consumerism, as well as potential solutions.
Mr. Sunil Pradhan, OSD-(G) RDD, who is also involved in plastic waste management, discussed household composting as a means to reduce waste and implement source segregation.
Lastly Mr Ajit Basnett, Project Coordinator SBM, conducted a session on the roles and responsibilities of SHGs.
Earlier Mr Jigme Wangchuk Bhutia, State Mission Director, DAY- National Urban Livelihood Mission (NULM) delivered the Welcome Address and the Vote of Thanks was proposed by Ms Jerusha Joy Shrestha.
