SCERT Launches Special Science and Math Education Programme in Collaboration with IISER Pune

The Six-Day Special Science and Mathematics Education Programme for Middle and Secondary levels was launched at the State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT), Lower Burtuk, here today.
The programme is organised by SCERT, Education Department, Government of Sikkim in collaboration with the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER), Pune.
Minister for Education, Sports and Youth Affairs and Law and Parliamentary Affairs Departments, Mr Raju Basnett attended the inaugural session as the chief guest.
Earlier, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed between SCERT and IISER Pune to formalise the partnership. The workshop is being attended by 105 Science and Mathematics teachers representing 34 blocks across the State. The training focuses on equipping teachers with innovative and research-based teaching methodologies.
In his address, the Minister congratulated the teaching fraternity and the Education Department on the improved results of Class 10 and 12 board examinations. He encouraged the participants to take forward the learnings from the programme and work consistently throughout the academic year, rather than relying solely on crash courses during winter. He further highlighted the Chief Minister’s Mentorship Programme as a crucial initiative and urged the teachers to contribute towards achieving the goal of 100 percent pass percentage. He stressed that no student should be left behind and underlined the importance of developing basic life skills from an early stage. Recalling his own school days, the Minister shared how a teacher helped him overcome his fear of mathematics, encouraging the participants to similarly motivate their students.
Addressing the gathering, Secretary (School Education) Education Department, Mr Tashi Chophel Lepcha, welcomed the partnership between SCERT and IISER and commended the teachers and students for their performance in the recent board examinations. He emphasised the need to strengthen foundational learning, particularly in classes 9 and 11, and urged all participants to take the workshop seriously as they would be disseminating the learnings in their respective districts. He stated that with collective effort, the objectives of the Chief Minister’s Mentorship Programme can be achieved, and that the present time offers an excellent opportunity for growth in the education sector.
A presentation was delivered by Dr Asim Auti, IISER representative, outlining the objectives of the programme, which include implementing innovative teaching methods across the State, monitoring and evaluation, classroom-level observation, and district-level workshops. A video showcasing the work of IISER in Sikkim was also screened.
Director of SCERT, Dr Rabin Chhetri delivered tje Welcome Address during the session, while the vote of thanks was proposed by Joint Director SCERT, Mr Shanti Ram Adhikari.
As a part of the event, tokens of appreciation were presented to the dignitaries, and STEM education kits were distributed to teachers and officials.
The programme also had the presence of Principal Director Education Department, Mr Sonam Denzongpa; Director School Education, Ms Tsheringkee Chingapa; Additional Director SCERT, Ms Tshering Lhamu Bhutia; Assistant Professor cum State Coordinator, Science Programme, SCERT, Mr Parijit Sutradhar; and District Representatives from all the six districts.
