SCERT Conducts Five-Day Orientation Programme for School Librarians

Gangtok, February 13 (IPR): The valedictory session of the five-day orientation programme for school librarians, organised by SCERT, was held at the SCERT auditorium today
The orientation programme was held from 9-13 February, 2026. The programme also included session for script writing for new text books in Hindi and Nepali under DIKSHA.
In her address, MLA cum Advisor, Rural Development Department, Ms Kala Rai, emphasised the need to align with emerging opportunities and underscored the importance of integrating well-equipped libraries in schools. She spoke about the concept of the human library and highlighted the significance of cultivating reading habits among children, noting that reading enhances comprehension and retention.
She further elaborated on the role of culture and the human library in fostering a deeper connection with our traditions and heritage. She urged participants to apply the learnings from the training in their respective schools and also stressed the pivotal role of teachers in shaping the future of the state.
In his address, Director-in-Charge, SCERT, Mr Shantiram  Adhikari, highlighted the significance of the programme and elaborated on the purpose of the training, which aimed to enhance and strengthen the quality of education in line with the recommendations of the National Education Policy (NEP), which mandates the establishment of functional libraries in schools.
Furthermore, he assured that SCERT would extend all necessary support and assistance to the attendees and expressed hope that the knowledge and skills gained from the training would be effectively implemented.
In her address, Programme Coordinator-cum- Faculty Member, SCERT, Ms Nikita Gurung, presented an in-depth overview of the five-day training programme. She elaborated on the topics covered and the resource persons involved. She also provided a session-wise account of the programme and outlined the follow-up activities planned.
Thereafter, the programme was followed by feedback and suggestions from the librarians, resource persons, and script writers.
The resource persons for the five-day training included Deputy Librarian, Sikkim University, Dr Sujit Kujur, Dr Sarvadha, Sikkim University, Dr Sangay Lhamu Bhutia, Nar Bahadur Bhandari Degree College, Dr Dina Subba, Nar Bahadur Bhandari Degree College, Ms Rikki Singh Cintury, Government Pharmacy College, Sajong, Principal attached to SCERT, Dr Raju Sharma, Assistant Professor, SCERT, Mr Raju Pradhan, Ms Harka Maya Rai, DIET, Gangtok.
Subsequently, the Chief Guest distributed certificates to the participants.
The programme had the presence of MLA cum Advisor, Rural Development Department, Ms Kala Rai, along with Director, SCERT, Dr Shantiram Adhikari, Additional Director, Ms Tshering Lhamu Bhutia, Deputy Director, Ms Karma Doma Kaleon, participants from all six districts and other dignitaries.
The Vote of Thanks was proposed by Deputy Director, SCERT, Ms Karma Doma Kaleon.
