Date: 29-May-2025
Pakyong, May 29 (IPR):
In a landmark event for animal welfare and conservation in the North-East, the Hon’ble Prime Minister of India, Mr Narendra Modi, virtually inaugurated the Mamring Gaushala from Bagdogra today. This unique facility, developed under the state plan at a cost of ₹17 crores, is located at Mamring, Amba GPU, in the Pakyong District and spans 7.31 acres.
Mamring Gaushala is the first of its kind in the entire North-East region. It is designed to provide shelter to abandoned animals, those rescued from slaughter, and those found in distress. The initiative represents a step forward in animal welfare, with a broader long-term vision of conserving indigenous animal species and promoting organic animal husbandry.
The Gaushala is equipped with state-of-the-art infrastructure, including eight animal sheds capable of housing up to 210 animals. It also features quarantine and isolation units, a fully functional veterinary clinic, a feed and fodder storage facility, grazing paddocks, a carcass and post-mortem unit, and a designated burial ground.
To ensure proper nourishment for the animals, the compound has been enriched with a variety of improved fodder plantations such as Congo signal grass, Narkat, Giant Napier, Co-2, and various tree fodders. The facility is also equipped with modern farming machinery, including a brush cutter, power tiller, chaff cutter, and sensor-enabled massage brushes for animals.
Additional features include solar-powered compound lighting and CCTV surveillance for enhanced security and operational efficiency. The Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services (AHVS) Department has developed a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) to ensure the smooth and effective functioning of the Gaushala.
Likewise, the Prime Minister also inaugurated the District Hospital, Namchi District; the Swarna Jayanti Maitreya Manjari Project at Ridge Park, Gangtok District; the Passenger Ropeway at Sangachoeling, Pelling, and unveiled the Statue of Bharat Ratna Atal Behari Vajpayee at Atal Amrit Udhyan at Sangkhola.
