Press Release from Sikkim Cooperative Milk Producers’ Union Limited
Geyzing, February 2026: The Sikkim Cooperative Milk Producers’ Union Limited (SCMPUL) successfully organised two consecutive awareness and sensitisation programmes on Good Hygienic and Manufacturing Practices under the National Programme for Dairy Development (NPDD) on 9th and 10th February 2026 in Geyzing District.
The programme on 9 February 2026 was held at GPK, Maneybong, Utterarey, covering milk collection centres of Kumuk-Sepi, Sopakha, Gump Dara, Bandukey, Upper Mukrung, and Upper & Middle Begha, with participation of over 150 dairy farmers, including Presidents and Secretaries of Dairy Cooperative Societies.
The second programme on 10 February 2026 was organised at Khandu MPCS, coinciding with the inauguration of the newly constructed society house at Khandu.
The program was graced by Shri Sudesh Kumar Limboo, Hon’ble Area MLA, Maneybong–Dentam Constituency, as the Chief Guest.
More than 160 dairy farmers from Radhu-Khandu, Dentam, and surrounding areas participated in the program.
During the program at Khandu, the contributions of founder personalities who had donated land and served the dairy cooperative as President, Secretary and Milk tester were fondly remembered.
These pioneers were felicitated posthumously, and the honours were received by their respective family members in recognition of their invaluable service to the dairy cooperative movement in Sikkim.
The awareness and technical deliberations during both programmes covered quality milk production, hygienic milking practices, scientific feeding and breeding, fodder cultivation, cooperative governance, timely audit and AGM, institutional finance, and benefits of association with the Union, in line with the programme conducted on 9 February 2026.
Addressing the gathering, the Hon’ble Area MLA expressed his happiness over SCMPUL’s grassroots outreach and encouraged farmers to adopt dairying, describing it as an enterprise that effectively utilises local resources, generates open employment opportunities, and has emerged as the backbone of the rural economy. He further advised the Union to explore the potential of the indigenous “SIRI” cattle breed.
Dr. T.B. Ghatani, Managing Director, SCMPUL, highlighted the historical contribution of the SIRI breed in agriculture, its nutritional importance, superior milk quality, and its potential to cater to organic milk and milk products within and outside the State.
Farmers were sensitised to consider passing a resolution and framing suitable by-laws to promote and conserve the indigenous SIRI breed.
Both programmes witnessed active interaction and enthusiastic participation from farmers. The combined awareness initiative concluded successfully on 10 February 2026 at 2:30 PM, reinforcing SCMPUL’s commitment towards sustainable dairying, cooperative governance, and farmer empowerment in Sikkim.
Both the programs were addressed by the Hon’ble Chairman of Sikkim Milk Union, Shri Y K Sharma, with insights of cooperative strength , Government initiative and the dairy farmers-centric activities initiated by the Union.
Hon’ble Advisor addressed the gathering at Bandukey GPK, highlighting pro-poor initiatives of the ruling Government. He encouraged the gathering to take up dairy as an enterprise not as an alternative of livlihood .
Zilla Panchayat member, Shri K.M Limboo, also encouraged the members and appreciated the grassroot centric approach of the Union.
