Preparations for Maghey Sankranti Mela 2026 Reviewed by MLA Mr Madan Cintury
Gangtok, December 5th (IPR): MLA-cum-Advisor Skill Development and Transport Departments Mr Madan Cintury, presided over preparatory meeting for the upcoming Maghey Sankranti Mela 2026 at Jorethang with Secretaries and Officers of Sports and Youth Affairs (S&YA) Department and Commerce and Industries Department in Gangtok today.
The Mela, whose existence spans 7 decades from 1955, will take place from January 14 to January 21 2026.
In the first leg of MLA's visit, he met Secretary S&YA Ms Yangchen D Tamang, SFA President Mr Menla Ethenpa, President NJNP Mr Pavitra Manav and Officers of SFA, Jorethang Football Association. The preparatory meeting was attended by NJNP President Pavitra Manav, Press Secretary to HCM Yougan Tamang, OSD to MLA Raju Roshan Pradhan, Director SIRD Bishal Mukhia, Executive members Maghey Sakranti Mela committee.
In his address, the MLA cited the importance of the Chief Minister's Gold Cup as part of the 71st Maghey Sankranti Mela 2026. The MLA insisted on showing hospitality to players from outside the State, which promotes the image of the State to the outsiders.
The MLA spoke about the vision of Chief Minister Mr Prem Singh Tamang to turn Maghey Sankrati Mela into an international event with the help of line departments and various stakeholders. He concluded his address by thanking the Sports department and SFA for their continuous effort towards Maghey Sankranti Mela.
Press Secretary to Chief Minister Mr Yougan Tamang reiterated the vision of the Chief Minister to transform Jorethang into an economic hub through the Maghey Sankranti Mela. He directed the Sports official to promote the Chief Minister's Gold Cup football tournament, which is an integral part of the Mela.
Pavitra Manav, NJNP President, also highlighted how the Maghey Sankranti Mela carries deep historical significance and holds the potential to uplift not just Sikkim but to gain wider recognition across the region and beyond. He emphasised that the festival preserves our shared heritage, strengthens cultural identity, and brings communities together in a spirit of unity. The Mela is not only a celebration of tradition, but also an opportunity to showcase local talent, promote tourism, and inspire younger generations to take pride in their roots.
During the open discussion, various issues pertaining to fixtures and dates of the Chief Minister's Gold Cup football tournament were discussed. The prize money, equipments, accomodation for guests and players were discussed at great length.
In the second leg of MLA's visit, he met with Secretary Commerce and Industries Department Ms Karma D Youtso, Director MSME Mr Ravi Kumar, OSD to MLA Mr Raju Roshan Pradhan, Director SIRD Bishal Mukhia and Executive members Maghey Sakranti Mela Committee.
The discussion revolved around making the Mela, a platform for budding entrepreneurs, wherein the Department would provide stalls and the required venue. Various issues such as promotion of the Mela at international event, involvement of investors and creating an atmosphere conducive to entrepreneurs were discussed at great length. After hearing the side of Maghey Mela Sankranti Committee, the Secretary assured that no stone will be left unturned for the success of Maghey Sankranti Mela 2026.
