Pakyong observes 211th Bhanu Jayanti with literary and cultural events.
Pakyong, July 13 (IPR):
The district-level celebration of the 211th Bhanu Jayanti, held under the theme "Sikkim Rajyasattako Swarnim Jayanti, Bhasha, Sahitya evam Sanskritiko Samvardhan", was observed at the community hall of St. Xavier's School today.
This year’s theme commemorates 50 years of Sikkim’s statehood and underscores the importance of preserving and promoting the region’s linguistic, literary, and cultural heritage. The event was jointly organised by Sikkim Pratibha Pratisthan and District Administrative Center (DAC) Pakyong.
Minister for Agriculture, Horticulture, AH&VS Department, and Fisheries Department cum MLA Chujachen, Mr Puran Gurung, graced the occasion as the chief guest alongside MLA Gnathang Machong cum Advisor, Social Welfare Department and Women, Child, Senior Citizen, and Person with Disabilities Welfare Department, Mrs Pamin Lepcha as guest of honour.
The day-long programme commenced with the inauguration of the newly installed statue of Adikavi Bhanu Bhakta Acharya at Bhanu Vatika, followed by the offering of homage to the poet.
During the programme, Mr Puran Gurung underscored the significance of Bhanu Jayanti and stressed the need to preserve culture and tradition amid rapid digital advancement, so that future generations remain connected to their roots.
He further urged students to develop the habit of reading books, stating that education is the greatest tool for shaping the future of the state.
Mr Gurung expressed concern over the poor fertility rate of the state, noting it as a matter that requires attention.
A prominent playwright and filmmaker from Sikkim, Mr Chunilal Ghimirey presided over the programme as the Chairperson. Acknowledging the organising committee, he traced back to the time when Bhanu Jayanti was first celebrated in India and later in Sikkim, recalling the early efforts of local literary figures and cultural organisations who played a key role in initiating the observance. He reflected on how the celebration has grown over the years, becoming an important platform for promoting language, literature, and cultural identity.
He further outlined the literary collection of Padma Shri awardee, Lt Gadul Singh Lama, popularly known as Sanu Lama, which includes short stories, an autobiography, and poetry collections, and highlighted the song lyric ‘Jahan Bagchha Tista ra Rangeet’ written by him.
As a tribute to Adikavi Bhanu Bhakta Acharya on his 211th birth anniversary, a series of literary and cultural presentations including poetry recitation, Ramayan recitation, integration dance, folk song and folk dance and an inter-school debate competition was conducted.
A Bal Bhanu Model Walk competition was also held, where young students dressed as Bhanu Bhakta Acharya took part in a thematic walk, portraying the life and ideals of the poet.
As part of the proceedings, the organising committee presented mementoes to the guests, followed by a prize distribution ceremony recognising winners of literary and cultural events.
At the onset of the programme, two minutes of silence were observed to pay tribute to the Padma Shri awardee and renowned Nepali litterateur, Lt Gadul Singh Lama popularly known as Sanu Lama.
