Pakyong Hosts First Intra District Badminton Tournament Under Nasha Mukt Bharat Initiative
Pakyong, October 07 (IPR):
The first Intra District Badminton Tournament, organised as part of the Nasha Mukt Sikkim initiative under the Nasha Mukt Bharat campaign, concluded yesterday at the Under Construction Indoor Hall being constructed by Airport Authority of India (AAI) under CSR. The tournament had the presence of Mr Puran Gurung, MLA Chujachen cum Minister for Agriculture, Horticulture, AH&VS Department, and Fisheries Development Department, Mrs Pamin Lepcha, MLA Gnathang Machong cum Advisor Social Welfare and Women and Child Welfare Department along with Mr SK Singh, Airport Director of Pakyong Greenfield Airport. This two day tournament, from 5th to 6th October, was organised by the Badminton Association of Pakyong, drawing 245 participants from across the district. The primary goal of the event was to spread awareness about the harmful effects of substance abuse while promoting badminton as a healthy outlet for youth and adults alike. It aimed to encourage a more active lifestyle, instill discipline, and foster a sense of community through sports, contributing to the broader mission of a drug-free society under the Nasha Mukt Bharat campaign. The tournament saw participation from the Badminton Associations of Pakyong, Central Pendam, Majhitar, Duga, Assam Lingzey, Rongli, Phadamchen and Rangpo. Winners from the various categories are as follows: Under-17 Boys Winner: Master John Rai, Namcheybong Runners up: Master Abhay Darjee, Shuttlers Association of Phadamchen Under-17 Girls Winner: Miss Adriel Rai, Pakyong Runners up: Miss Sreyansa Gurung, St Xavier's School Pakyong Men's Open Winner: Mr Bibek Chettri, Central Pendam Badminton Association Runners up: Mr Tseten Dorjee Bhutia, Namcheybong Men's Doubles Winner: Tseten Dorjee Bhutia and Mr Niraj Chettri, Namcheybong Runners up: Mr Arunodoy Banerjee and Mr Om Gupta, SMIT Majhitar Women's Doubles Winner (Open): Ms Rosy Lepcha and Ms Tshering Doma Bhutia, Badminton Association of Pakyong Runners up (Open): Ms Anunaya Rai and Ms Abhinaya Rai, Aho Mixed Doubles Winner (Open): Ms Anunaya Rai, Aho and Mr Chozang Lepcha, Chujachen Runners up (Open) : Ms Pranita Chettri and Mr Bibek Chettri, Central Pendam Badminton Association Men's 40+ Doubles Winner: Dr Subash Sebastin and Dr Karma Zimba Bhutia, Badminton Association of Pakyong Runners up: Mr Kinga Tharchen Bhutia and Mr Gyan Bahadur Subba Men's 50+ Doubles Winner: Mr Bhanu Pradhan, Sudunglakha and Mr Raj Kumar Gazmer, Chujachen Runners up: Mr Pushkar Khatiwara and Mr Basudev Khanal, Central Pendam Badminton Association The Promising Player of the Tournament was awarded to Master Soumodip Kar, Badminton Club of Duga, for his performance. Meanwhile, the Rising Star Award was presented to Mr Palzor Sherpa and Mr Karan Rai of the Shuttlers Association of Phadamchen. Additionally, a skit promoting the Nasha Mukt initiative was performed by the students of Eklavya Model Residential School (EMRS), Parakha. The tournament concluded with a prize distribution ceremony, where the winners were awarded trophies and certificates in recognition of their achievements.
