Pakyong District observes World Environment Day 2024
Pakyong, 5 June (IPR): The World Environment Day 2024 celebration under the theme “Land Restoration Desertification and Drought Resilience” was organised by the office of Zilla Upadhakshya, in association with 05-Chalamthang Pacheykhani Gram Unit, at the community hall of Pacheykhani Secondary School, Pakyong today.
During the event, Ms Prabha Pradhan, Zilla Upadhakshya, emphasised the necessity of establishing a pristine and salubrious environment for all individuals. She highlighted that senior citizens play a pivotal role in society, serving as an exemplar to young students by showcasing the advantages of a clean environment, which ultimately contributes to our collective well-being and longevity.
Furthermore, she imparted instructions to abide by the state's initiative, "Mero Rukh Mero Santati," wherein the planting of 108 saplings commemorates childbirth while fostering a stronger bond between parents, children, and nature.
Moreover, she underscored the significance of addressing climate change and promoting afforestation as means to enhance our health and overall quality of life.
Mr Sonam Pintsho Bhutia, DFO Forest and Environment Department, shed light on various environmental challenges of our time, such as the extinction of species, ecosystem disruptions, water scarcity, and water erosion.
He elaborated on this year's theme and discussed potential crises that may arise while emphasising the need to adopt sustainable practices, conserve resources, and promote eco-friendly behaviours for a sustainable future.
Furthermore, he encouraged everyone to raise awareness on the Mero Rukh Mero Santati" scheme and participate to take advantage of its benefits, thereby creating a positive environmental impact for future generations.
The dignitaries initiated a plantation drive at the beginning of the event, symbolising the significance of forests and the importance of fostering a sustainable environment.
Likewise, Dr Ramgopal Devadas, Principal Scientist and Joint Director, ICAR Gangtok presented a brief presentation on climate change and its’ increasing variabilities to aggravate the problems of future food security by exerting pressure on agriculture. In addition, he also discussed different mitigation and adaptation strategies that ought to be implemented for combating climate issues.
The main highlight of the event was felicitation to Mr Chandra Das Basnet, a centenarian who turned 103 years old and was also the distinguished Chief Guest of the day. Additionally, the senior citizens of the region were also felicitated recognising their valuable contribution to society.
To create awareness on World Environment Day, a series of inter-school literary programmes including debate, extempore and quiz competitions were conducted along with felicitation of government officials.
Also present during the programme were Mr Robin Sewa, ADC (Dev), Mr AD Chettri, CEO Education, Mrs Sonam Doma Bhutia, JD Education, Mr Sonam Tshering Lepcha SDM Rongli, Director AAI along with dignitaries from various line departments, heads of the institutions and students.
