Pakyong District observes National Sports Day 2026 with sports activities and felicitation

Pakyong, August 29 (IPR): The District-level National Sports Day 2026 was observed by the Department of Sports and Youth Affairs, Pakyong District, at St Xavier’s School ground, Pakyong, today, commemorating the birth anniversary of legendary Indian sportsperson Major Dhyan Chand and promoting a healthy lifestyle.
The observance was held under the theme “Khelega Bharat, Jeetega Bharat”.
The event was attended by the District Collector, Pakyong, Ms Pari Bishnoi, as the chief guest.
Chief Education Officer, Mr Narayan Mishra; Sub Divisional Magistrate, Pakyong, Mr NK Bhandari; and Principal, St Xavier's School, Pakyong, Rev Father Marcelino Sukden Lepcha were present as Guests of Honour.
During the event, District Collector, Pakyong, Ms Pari Bishnoi congratulated the medal winners as well as all the participants, emphasising the importance of participation in sports. She encouraged the students to dream big and pursue sports with passion, discipline and courage, stating that they could aspire to become the next sporting legends.
Highlighting the State Government’s focus on promoting sports, she urged the Sports Department to identify and nurture promising talent at the grassroots level. Referring to the sporting potential of the State and its natural advantages, she encouraged the students to make the most of the opportunities available and strive to represent Sikkim and the nation at the highest level.
Addressing the gathering, Joint Director, Sports and Youth Affairs Department, Mr Nim Dorjee Bhutia, highlighted the significance of National Sports Day and the contribution of Major Dhyan Chand to Indian sports.
He noted that Major Dhyan Chand’s achievements and legacy continue to inspire the country’s sporting journey and encouraged students and young sportspersons of the district to actively participate in sports and strive for excellence. He further emphasised the role of sports in promoting not only sporting excellence but also health and fitness.
Likewise, Assistant Director, Sports and Youth Affairs Department, Mr Robert Lepcha, stated that the observance was aimed not only to motivate medal winners and accomplished sportspersons but also to encourage everyone to inculcate physical fitness and maintain good health. Recalling the contribution and achievements of Major Dhyan Chand, he stated that the day was dedicated to the hockey legend in tribute to his enduring contribution to Indian sports.
As part of the observance, the Chief Minister’s One Mile Run was flagged off, with participants from various schools taking part in the run. Following the run, a Taekwondo demonstration was presented by the students, showcasing their skills and discipline.
The occasion witnessed the felicitation of Mr Durga Prasad Subba of Aho Yangtam in recognition of his decade-long service and dedication to football and his contribution towards nurturing sporting talent at the grassroots level.
The programme also featured a sports-themed quiz, engaging the participants on various aspects of sports and sporting personalities.
Prizes and certificates were presented to the winners and participants in recognition of their achievements and active participation.
Also present were officials, coaches and staff of the Department of Sports and Youth Affairs, escort teachers from various schools and Presidents of various sports associations.
