Pakyong District observes National Fish Farmers Day
Pakyong, 10 July (IPR): The Fisheries Department, Pakyong District, observed National Farmer’s Day cum Farmer’s Meet in Pakyong today.
The National Fish Farmer's Day is celebrated annually on July 10 to recognise and appreciate the invaluable contributions of fish farmers, aquaculture industry professionals, and other stakeholders in ensuring a sustainable and thriving fisheries sector.
Addressing the gathering, Ms Prabha Pradhan, and Zilla Upadhakshya, commended the efforts undertaken by the department in apprising the attendees on various schemes and resources available within the sector. She expressed her gratitude to the farmers for their contributions, urging them to create awareness about the sector and strive towards becoming successful entrepreneurs.
She then stressed the importance of educating the younger generation about diverse farming techniques and establishing a sustainable source of income rather than relying solely on traditional employment opportunities.
In addition, she highlighted several state government schemes, including the Uttar Poorva Transformative Industrialization Scheme (UNNATI), which aims to support economic growth by providing financial aid at the grassroots level.
Additionally, Ms Gouri Mukhia, AD Fisheries Department, provided valuable insights about the fish farming industry, highlighting its potential. She proposed practical ideas to improve the lives of farmers and encouraged the purchase of locally available fish species for rituals. She also cautioned against the "Thai Magur (Catfish)," underscoring that it is a predatory fish and is banned in India.
She informed that three nominated farmers are being sent for training programmes that would be focused on various techniques, including carp training, breeding, fish packaging, and pickle making, further urging them to spread awareness among their peers about these practices.
She also stated that information about the updates on various schemes for 2024-2025 would be accessible online and assured that the department would be committed to addressing their concerns and guiding them.
Prior to it, felicitations were presented to the emerging and progressive farmers to honour and acknowledge their contribution to the sector.
Mr Krishna P Sharma, Range Officer Rangpo provided a brief overview of ornamental fish farming. He underscored the vast potential for entrepreneurial growth and income generation within this field. He also shared valuable information about various ornamental fish species, establishing and designing aquariums, as well as techniques for enhancing their beauty and maintaining hygiene.
Mr. Yogesh Dangal, Block Officer, provided information on various schemes aimed at supporting the local farming community. These include the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY), Mukhya Mantri Matsya Utpadhan Yojana (MMMUY), Group Accident Insurance Scheme (GAIS), and Kisan Credit Card (KCC). He explained the eligibility criteria, subsidies, and various facilities available to beneficiaries under these schemes, designed to contribute to the economic growth of progressive farmers in the region.
He emphasised the significance of the day and informed about the contributions of Dr Hiralal Chaudhury and Dr Alikunhi who induced the breeding of major carp and transformed the aquaculture industry from traditional methods to intensive practices.
Subsequently, Mr Shayuja Rai, FMO, Rangpo, outlined a brief overview of fish feed management, including the basic food elements needed by the fish, the correct way of feeding, nutritional requirements, hygiene, and storage methods.
The day saw the participation of fifty farmers and witnessed an interactive session wherein the participants expressed their challenges, achievements, and agendas to excel in the field.
Also present were officials from fisheries departments and farmers.
