PM Modi Speaks to Chief Minister, Following NHPC Tunnel Tragedy
Gangtok, July 21: Following the tragic incident at the under-construction tunnel of the NHPC Teesta Stage VI Hydroelectric Project at Samardung, Jholungey, in Namchi district, Prime Minister Mr Narendra Modi spoke with the Chief Minister Mr Prem Singh Tamang over the phone to enquire about the situation and review the ongoing rescue operations.
During the conversation, the Prime Minister expressed deep concern and compassion for the affected workers and their families. He assured the State Government of every possible assistance from the Government of India to support the rescue efforts and provide relief to those impacted by the tragedy.
The Chief Minister expressed gratitude to the Prime Minister for his timely intervention, unwavering support, and solidarity with the people of Sikkim during this difficult time. He stated that the Prime Minister’s assurance has brought immense strength and reassurance to the State as rescue operations continue.
Meanwhile, rescue operations are being carried out on a war footing by multiple agencies, including the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), Sikkim State Disaster Management Authority (SSDMA), District Administration, Sikkim Police, Fire and Emergency Services, medical teams from Rangpo Primary Health Centre (PHC), and local volunteers. Specialised teams from Pakyong and Siliguri are also assisting in the operation, working tirelessly to evacuate the bodies of the remaining workers trapped inside the tunnel.
Expressing profound sorrow over the incident, the Chief Minister conveyed his heartfelt condolences to the families of the workers who lost their lives. He said the thoughts and prayers of the entire State are with the bereaved families and assured them of the Government’s unwavering support during this period of grief.
The Chief Minister informed that he is closely monitoring the rescue operation and has directed all concerned departments and agencies to expedite rescue efforts, extend every possible assistance to the affected families, and ensure that the highest standards of safety are maintained throughout the operation.
He also acknowledged the dedication, courage, and professionalism of the rescue personnel engaged in the challenging mission under difficult conditions.
Appealing for public cooperation, the Chief Minister urged citizens to remain calm, refrain from spreading unverified information, and keep the affected workers and their families in their prayers.
