Open Marathon Organised Under Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan in Pakyong District
Pakyong, October 1 (IPR): The District Administrative Centre (DAC), Pakyong, in collaboration with Government Secondary School, Sudunglakha, organised an Open Marathon under the aegis of the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan at Rongli today.
The marathon was flagged off by District Collector, Pakyong, Ms Pari Bishnoi. The event centred on the message “Healthy Youth, Strong India, Drug Free Society,” and aimed to promote healthy living, participation in sports and collective efforts towards a drug-free society.
Following the conclusion of the marathon, a programme was held at Government Secondary School, Sudunglakha.
Addressing the gathering, DC, Pakyong congratulated all the participants for their participation and for completing the marathon. She highlighted the importance of sports under the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan, stating that participation in sports helps individuals understand their physical potential and promotes a healthy and active lifestyle. She further assured that the District Administrative Centre would continue to support sports activities.
She emphasised that good health is a blessing and cautioned that drug abuse can adversely affect an individual’s physical and emotional well-being. She encouraged everyone to actively contribute towards the objectives of the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan and collectively work towards building a drug-free society.
Addressing the students, she encouraged them to remain focused on their goals, develop a clear vision for their future and strive towards achieving success in life. She also highlighted the support extended by the State Government in various sectors, including education and sports and urged the students to make use of the available opportunities for building their careers.
Referring to the disaster preparedness demonstrations conducted during the programme, Ms Bishnoi urged the gathering to take the safety measures seriously and remain prepared to respond appropriately during disasters and emergencies.
Marathon Man of Sikkim, Mr Amar Subba, also addressed the gathering and shared his insights on the importance of health and the concept of “health is wealth.” He highlighted the role of physical fitness in daily life and emphasised the importance of education and sports in the overall development of students.
The programme was followed by a safety drill conducted by the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), which included demonstrations on search and rescue and first aid. The team also explained the “Drop, Cover and Hold” technique to be followed during earthquakes.
A Fire Safety Drill was also conducted by Rhenock Fire Station, during which the participants were briefed on fire safety measures and the “Stop, Drop and Roll” technique. Safety measures to be observed during thunderstorms and lightning incidents, both indoors and outdoors, were also explained, along with warning signs to be observed during severe weather conditions.
The Open Marathon was conducted in Men’s and Women’s categories, with a 10-km run for men and a 7-km run for women.
The winners in the Women’s category were:
1st: Priya Tamang, Kalimpong
2nd: Binita Kami, Singtam
3rd: Chandra Kala Sharma, Pakyong
In the Men’s category:
1st: Amrit Pal Singh, Indian Army
2nd: Bikash Bhujel
3rd: Pradip Mahata, Resithang
Furthermore, winners received cash prizes, while all participants were given certificates to recognise their achievements.
The event was also attended by SDM Rongli, Mr Suren Kumar Pradhan; Joint Director, DESME, Ms Ninila Kazi; Deputy Director, Agriculture Department, Ms Rebecca Gurung; Deputy Director Horticulture Department, Ms Hissay Cheday Bhutia; Deputy Director, AH&VS, Ms Prena Baraily; WO Social Welfare Department, Ms Sunita Dahal; District Information Officer, Ms Deeki D Bhutia; along with BDOs Rongli and Rhenock; representatives from NDRF, SSB, police personnel; staff from various line departments and general public.
