Open Knockout Football Tournament advances to semi-final stage at Pakyong

Pakyong, August 12 (IPR): The ongoing Open Knockout Football Tournament 2026, organised as part of the celebrations marking the 80th Independence Day, entered the semi-final stage at St Xavier’s School Ground, Pakyong, today.
The tournament is being organised by Pakyong Sporting Club in collaboration with the District Administrative Centre (DAC), Pakyong. Chairman, Health and Family Welfare Department, Mr Phurba Rinzing Sherpa graced the event as the Chief Guest.
Superintendent of Police, Pakyong District, Mr Tshering Sherpa; DFO (T), Mr SP Bhutia; DCSO Pakyong, Mr Bhim Pradhan and Vice President and Management Head of Mayfair Casino, Dr Binita Shanker attended the event as Guests of Honour.
In the first semi-final match, ASC Bangalore faced GTP Gangtok, with GTP Gangtok securing a 3-1 victory to book their place in the tournament final. Mr Pradeep Lama of GTP Gangtok was adjudged the Man of the Match for his performance. Before the semi-final, an exhibition match was played between Pakyong Sporting Club and PRS (Following Humanity).
Meanwhile, the 80th Independence Day District-Level Inter-School Under-14 Boys Football Tournament 2026 also continued with semi-final matches at St Xavier’s School Ground. The tournament is being organised by the Department of Sports and Youth Affairs, Pakyong District, in collaboration with DAC, Pakyong.
In today’s match, Government Senior Secondary School, Rhenock defeated St Xavier’s School with a score of 3-1, securing their place in the final. Mr Aryadeep Pradhan of Government Senior Secondary School Rhenock, was adjudged the Man of the Match. As part of the tournament, a knockout-format tug-of-war competition is also being organised among clubs, associations and local groups. Adding to the programme, cultural performances were presented by students of Dugalakha Junior High School and participants from Assam Lingzey.
The programme also featured a band display by the students of St Xavier's School, Pakyong. The event also had the presence of Zilla Adhyaksha, Pakyong District, Mrs Laden Lhamu Bhutia; SHO Pakyong, Mr Pradeep Chettri; DIO, IPRD, Mrs Deeki D Bhutia; local gentry and members of the public.
