Open Knockout Football Tournament 2026 enters eighth day in Pakyong
Pakyong, August 08 (IPR): The ongoing Open Knockout Football Tournament 2026, organised as part of the celebrations marking the 80th Independence Day, entered its eighth day today at St Xavier’s School Ground, Pakyong, with two matches played during the day.
The tournament is being organised by Pakyong Sporting Club in collaboration with the District Administrative Centre, Pakyong.
Minister for Roads and Bridges Department, Mr N B Dahal, graced the event as the Chief Guest.
Additional Chief Engineers, Power Department, Mr Gyampo Bhutia and Mr Thenlay Gyatso Bhutia; Superintending Engineers, Roads and Bridges Department, Mr Tara Subba and Mr TN Adhikari; Divisional Engineer, PHE Department, Mr Rajen Gurung; Assistant Engineer, Roads and Bridges Department, Mr Navin Chettri; AE, PHE Department, Mr Kiran Sharma; AE, UDD, Mr Durga Pd Sharma; AE, Buildings and Housing Department, Mr Chinlop Lepcha and Ms Jyoti Rana attended the event as Guests of Honours and Special Guests.
In the first match, St Xavier’s School faced the Forest Department, with Forest Department securing a 1-0 victory.
Mr Akash Man Chaudary of the Forest Department was adjudged the Man of the Match for his performance.
The second match saw Rangers take on State Sports Academy Gangtok, with Rangers registering a 4-1 victory.
Mr Akash Thapa of Rangers was adjudged the Man of the Match.
In addition, a tug-of-war competition on a knockout basis among clubs, associations and local groups is also being organised as part of the tournament.
Meanwhile, the 80th Independence Day District-Level Inter-School Under-14 Boys Football Tournament 2026 also continued with its sixth day of matches at St Xavier’s School Ground.
The tournament is being organised by the Department of Sports and Youth Affairs, Pakyong District, in collaboration with DAC, Pakyong.
In today’s match, Pachey Senior Secondary School defeated St Xavier’s School A with a score of 4-1.
The day also witnessed the commencement of the 80th Independence Day Inter-Constituency Girls’ Knockout Football Tournament 2026 at St Xavier’s School Ground, Pakyong. The tournament is being organised by Pakyong Sporting Club in collaboration with DAC Pakyong, with the support of the Advisor cum MLA Gnathang-Machong Constituency, aimed at encouraging and promoting greater participation of girls in sports.
In the inaugural match, Gnathang-Machong Constituency registered a 8-0 victory over Chujachen Constituency.
The programme also featured a band display by the students of St Xavier's School, Pakyong.
Also present at the event were Zilla Adhyaksha, Pakyong District, Mrs Laden Lhamu Bhutia; DFO (T), Mr SP Bhutia; SHO Pakyong, Mr Pradeep Chettri; local gentry and members of the public.
