National Sports Day Celebration at Soreng, BAC Level
Soreng, August 29 (IPR): The Sports and Youth Affairs Department, Soreng District, organised an event in commemoration of the National Sports Day 2026 celebration, at Soreng Jautar Indoor Badminton Stadium today, under the theme “Khelega Bharat, Jeetega Bharat.”
The event marked the birth anniversary of legendary hockey player Major Dhyan Chand, popularly known as the “Wizard of Hockey,” and celebrated his contribution to Indian sports.
The chief guest, President of Soreng Nagar Panchayat (SNP), Ms Dina Hangma Subba in her address, acknowledged the developmental initiatives undertaken in the area, crediting the area MLA and the Government of Sikkim. She emphasised the importance of sportsmanship and extended her best wishes to all the participating persons.
Addressing the gathering, special guest MEO Soreng, Mr Roshan Sharma, highlighted the significance of National Sports Day and honouring Major Dhyan Chand’s achievement as a matter of pride. He also highlighted the theme of the event and emphasised the importance of physical fitness, discipline and maintaining a positive sporting spirit.
Thereafter, a boxing sparring demonstration was presented by the KIC trainees, showcasing their skill and training.
Earlier, Deputy Director, Sports & Youth Affairs (Soreng), Mrs Mamita Gurung, delivered a welcome address, highlighting the significance of the day and outlining the activities planned for the occasion. She welcomed the gathering and encouraged the participants to uphold the spirit of sportsmanship.
The highlight of the celebrations featured a speech competition, creative placard competition, along with the Chief Minister’s One-Mile Run for Under-15 boys, girls, Open Men, and Women, including an Under-17 Badminton Tournament for boys and girls.
The winners are to participate in the district level tomorrow. The winners of the following events were:
