Namprikdang: A Legacy of Cultural Reverence and Resilience Amidst Natural Calamity
Dzongu, 16/06/2025:
Namprikdang holds immense historical and cultural significance for the indigenous Lepcha community of Dzongu, who have revered this sacred land since time immemorial. Nestled at the confluence of the majestic Teesta and Kanaka rivers, Namprikdang is sanctified as the spiritual epicenter where the people of Dzongu pay homage to their guardian deity, Mt. Khangchendzonga, through the annual celebration of Namsoong with great devotion and festive fervor.
As the state of Sikkim proudly commemorates its 50th year of statehood in 2025 since its historic merger with the Indian Union, the Namsoong Festival at Namprikdang too marks its golden jubilee-a testament to half a century of enduring tradition and communal celebration that traces its roots back to the era of the Chogyal monarchy.
However, this hallowed ground of heritage suffered a tragic blow on the 3rd of October 2023, when a catastrophic Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) ravaged the region. The deluge completely engulfed Namprikdang, obliterating vital infrastructures and treasured resources. What once stood as a vibrant cultural haven-with its serene forested grounds, forest nurseries, the iconic Lepcha Museum with invaluable artefacts, and heritage guest houses-is now reduced to a poignant memory etched in the hearts of the Lepcha community.
In the face of such profound loss, the resilient people of Dzongu have committed themselves to the revival and preservation of their cultural identity. In preparation for the 50th Namsoong Festival in 2025, concerted efforts have begun to restore the spirit of Namprikdang. These initiatives are being undertaken under the visionary leadership and guidance of the Honourable Area MLA and Minister, Shri Pintsho Namgyal Lepcha, who also serves as the Chief Patron of the celebration.
Guided by the vision of the Honourable Chief Minister, Shri Prem Singh Tamang (Golay), the first phase of preparations was inaugurated with a symbolic bamboo plantation drive. Bamboo, revered for its ecological significance, is being planted not merely for ceremonial purposes but as a strategic step to mitigate the severe soil erosion caused by the recent GLOF, reinforcing the community’s sustainable and forward-looking approach to environmental restoration.
Today’s inaugural plantation event was organized by the Namprikdang Namsoong Celebration Committee in collaboration with the Block Administrative Centre (BAC), Passingdang, Dzongu. Held in the early hours of the day, the event witnessed active participation from the Namsoong Executive Committee members, Block Development Officer, officials from the BAC, and staff from the Forest Department of Dzongu Block.
This momentous occasion marks the formal launch of the preparation process for the golden jubilee celebration of Namprikdang Namsoong 2025-a celebration not only of cultural heritage but of resilience, revival, and unity in the face of adversity.
