Namchi Marks World Bicycle Day with ‘Sundays on Cycle’ Initiative
Namchi, June 7 (IPR): Namchi district observed World Bicycle Day with enthusiasm through a cycling event organised under the theme “Sundays on Cycle” by the Sports Authority of India (SAI), STC Namchi, in collaboration with MY Bharat and the Sports & Youth Affairs Department, Namchi.
The occasion witnessed the participation of a large number of officers, students and cycling enthusiasts, who took part in a cycling rally aimed at promoting fitness, environmental sustainability and healthy living.
In addition to the rally, a series of sporting activities were organised, including a 100-metre sprint for boys, a 60-metre sprint for girls, a women’s walkathon and passing-the-ball competition for women.
Addressing the gathering, Mr Ruben Pradhan, In-charge, STC Namchi, highlighted the significance of the bicycle as a simple, affordable, reliable and environmentally sustainable mode of transport. He stated that cycling complements the broader Fit India Movement by encouraging greater youth participation in physical activity and contributing towards the vision of a fitter and healthier nation.
He further emphasised that cycling offers numerous physical health benefits and can be enjoyed by individuals across all age groups.
Adding vibrancy to the programme, a Zumba demonstration was also presented, encouraging participants to engage in enjoyable physical activity while reinforcing the importance of fitness and an active lifestyle.

• 2nd – Inran Rai
• 3rd – Ongchen Lepcha
60-Metre Sprint (Girls)
• 1st – Monika (Athlete From Delhi)
• 2nd – Catrina Rai (SAI Athlete)
• 3rd – Poonam (Athlete From Delhi)
Women’s Walkathon
• 1st – Deepti Pradhan - DIO (IPR)
• 2nd – Shreeya Rai- Dietitian, Namchi District Hospital
• 3rd – Nimphuti Lepcha (Community Member)
Passing the Ball Competition (Women)
• 1st – Monika (Athlete From Delhi)
• 2nd – Sudha Sharma (Community Member)
• 3rd – Nimphuti Lepcha (Community Member)
Among those present on the occasion were Mr Basant Yonzon Tamang Chairman Sikkim Youth Development Board, Mr Sanjay Dilpali Rai Chairman Art, Culture and Heritage Department Board, Ms Saraswati Sharma Vice- Chairman NMC, Mr Bikash Tiwari SDPO Namchi, Mr Basant Pradhan Deputy Director,Sports & Youth Affairs Department, Mr Tsheten Lepcha DFO (T), Ms Deepti Pradhan DIO Namchi, along with officers from various line departments, coaches and students.
