NAFSCOB hosts National Consultative Meeting in Sikkim
Gangtok, March 17(IPR): A day-long National Consultative Meeting on Recent Trends in Short Term Cooperative Credit and Banking Institute was organised by the National Federation of State Cooperative Banks in association with SISCO Bank at a local hotel today.
The programme had the presence of the Minister, Cooperation Department and Rural Development Department, Mr Arun Upreti as the Chief Guest.
In his address, Minister of the Cooperation Department, Mr Arun Upreti, underscored the vital role of the cooperative movement in fostering inclusive economic development across the country. He highlighted the state government’s initiatives to support farmers, entrepreneurs and rural households, while stressing the need to adapt to evolving financial dynamics through digital banking, improved governance, regulatory compliance and transparency and professional management to ensure sustainability.
In his introductory remark, Managing Director, NAFSCOB and President, ICBA, Mr Bhima Subrahmanyam, presented an overview of the programme and outlined the key themes for deliberation, including measures to expand business growth of STCCS during Amrit Kaal (2022–2047), implementation of recommendations of the task force constituted by the Government of India to address challenges faced by cooperative credit institutions, identification of critical issues, and recent regulatory, supervisory and policy initiatives by the Union Ministry of Cooperation impacting rural cooperatives.
He further highlighted the National Cooperative Policy 2025, Business Reform Action Plan (BRAP), cooperative credit and banking in the North Eastern States, and the vision and mission of NAFSCOB (2022–2047). He also spoke on the integration of DCCBs with NAFSCOB, activities under the International Cooperative Year (IYC), and underscored the importance of training and capacity building to identify, realise and harness the business potential within STCCS.
In his address, Advisor, SISCO Bank, Mr Chaitanya Sharma, expressed confidence that the meeting would be productive, benefiting from the valuable inputs of all the delegates.
Chairman, SISCO Bank, Mr Dup Pintso Kaleon, in his address, welcomed dignitaries from across the country and underscored the significance of NAFSCOB. He highlighted the cooperative scenario of the state and elaborated on the role of the federation, while emphasising that agriculture and the rural landscape should remain the primary focus of cooperative initiatives.
In his address, Chairman, Himachal Pradesh, Mr Davender Singh Shyam, highlighted the promotion of organic practices in the state and emphasised the role of cooperative societies in strengthening such initiatives. He underscored the importance of organic produce and noted that Himachal Pradesh is drawing inspiration from Sikkim’s achievements in the organic sector.
In his address, Ex-Chairman, NAFSCOB, Mr Konduru Ravinder Rao, congratulated SISCO Bank for organising the meeting, describing it as a significant recognition for the cooperative sector. He highlighted key milestones of the cooperative movement and recent policy developments, and stressed the need for cooperatives to remain vigilant and adapt proactively to evolving opportunities.
In his address, CEO, Satara, Mr Rajendra Sarkale, highlighted the functioning of Satara DCCB and emphasised the need for cooperative banks to progress alongside other banking institutions, he also congratulated all the award winners.
In his address, Director, Board of NABARD & Director, Central Board of RBI, Dr Satish Marathe, highlighted that cooperatives are key growth engines of the sector. He emphasised the need for innovative, out of the box approaches to strengthen cooperatives, stressed prioritising the rural sector, and underscored that cooperative laws should be empowering and supportive of cooperative societies.
In her welcome address, Managing Director, StCB, Ms Pema Chenzom, highlighted the significance of the programme, noting that it is the first time a national-level cooperative banking programme is being held in the state. She briefly outlined the schedule of the day-long event and emphasised that cooperative banks form the backbone of the cooperative sector, while also reflecting on the cooperative banking scenario in the state.
She expressed gratitude to the State Government and the Minister for their support. She hoped that the deliberations would be fruitful and productive.
