Mission Team from World Bank and PMU Visits Sikkim INSPIRES project sites under KNP
Gyalshing, April 25 (IPR): A delegation from the World Bank and officials from the Project Management Unit (PMU) under the Sikkim INSPIRES Programme visited project sites in Khangchendzonga National Park (KNP) area, Gyalshing District, from April 24 to 25.
The World Bank delegation, led by Team Leader Ms Verena Phipps Ebeler, along with Programme Director of Sikkim INSPIRES Ms Rohini Pradhan, visited project sites along the Dzongri-Goechala trekking trail within Khangchendzonga National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
During the visit, the officials trekked to Sachen Campsite along the Dzongri-Goechala trail, where they halted overnight and visited ongoing project sites. Divisional Forest Officer-KNP, Ms Bhumika Rai, briefed the delegation on the ongoing developmental activities within the KNP area.
The visiting delegation was accompanied by Joint Director, Directorate of Ecotourism, Forest & Environment Department, Ms Tshering Denka Bhutia, DFO KNP Ms Bhumika Rai, AD-cum-OSD DET, Range Officer-KNP, officials from the Forest Department, a medical team from Yuksam PHC, and a yoga instructor from Yuksam Senior Secondary School.
The Sikkim INSPIRES Programme (Integrated Service Provision and Innovation for Reviving Economies) is an initiative by the Government of Sikkim, supported by the World Bank, aimed at boosting economic growth, particularly for women and youth. The programme supports community-based tourism, digital marketing training, entrepreneurship in non-farm sectors, and enhancement of last-mile infrastructure across the state.
During the two-day visit, officials interacted with local communities, tourism stakeholders and EDC Members along the trekking trail to understand the support extended under the Sikkim INSPIRES Programme for livelihood enhancement and economic development.
The delegation also participated in a birdwatching session guided by a trained birding expert under the Sikkim INSPIRES Programme. A yoga session was conducted at the campsite for the visiting delegates and officials.
The official visit concluded today with a brief programme at the KNP Interpretation Centre in Yuksam, Gyalshing District.
