Minister Tshering T Bhutia attends 211th Bhanu Jayanti celebration at Gerethang School.

Gyalshing, July 13 (IPR): The 211th birth anniversary of the revered poet and literary figure, Bhanubhakta Acharya, was celebrated with great fervour at Government Senior Secondary School, Gerethang under Yuksam-Tashiding, Gyalshing District,today. The three-day grand celebration, held from July 11 to 13, featured a host of literary and cultural activities to honour the contributions of the pioneer poet of Nepali literature. The event was organised by the Government Senior Secondary School, Gerethang, to honour the legacy of Acharya Bhanubhakta.
Minister for Tourism & Civil Aviation, Commerce & Industries, and Food Processing Department-Cum- Area MLA, Mr Tshering T Bhutia, graced the occasion as the Chief Guest.
In his address, Minister Bhutia emphasised the importance of language and literature in preserving cultural identity. He encouraged students and youth to draw inspiration from Bhanubhakta Acharya, who is best known for his translation of the Ramayana into Nepali.
He spoke on the need to preserve and promote the cultural heritage, traditions, and linguistic identity of Sikkim, especially among the younger generations.
The Minister also paid tribute to late Padmashree Sanu Lama, a revered literary figure of Sikkim, and extended condolences on his demise.
Touching upon pressing social issues, the Minister spoke firmly on the threat of substance abuse and online gaming addiction among youth. He reiterated the state government’s commitment to a drug-free Sikkim and pledged to make Yuksam-Tashiding constituency a model in this regard. He further highlighted various youth-focused government schemes in entrepreneurship, education, and skill development, urging young people to make full use of these initiatives.
He also outlined ongoing and upcoming developmental projects in the Yuksam-Tashiding constituency, presenting a roadmap for inclusive progress.
The programme featured multiple inter-school competitions, with students from across the constituency participating in poem recitations, Ramayana path recitations, and traditional dance contests.
Also present on the occasion were Advisor to the Chief Minister Mr GM Lepcha, Zilla Adakshya Gyalshing Mr Ds Limboo, Advisor to State Medicinal Plants Board Mr NB Limboo, BDO Chongrang Ms Geeta Kumari Gurung, BDO Yuksam Mr SM Limboo, Zilla and Gram Panchayat Members, government officials, SMC members, teachers, students from various schools across the Yuksam-Tashiding constituency, and the general public.
The celebration featured literary and cultural competitions. In the GPU-level dance competition, Gerethang-Labing GPU secured 1st place, followed by Labdang and Tingling-Khechuperi. In the inter-school poem recitation, Gerethang SSS stood first, with Yuksam SSS and Tashiding SSS following. Tashiding SSS also topped the Ramayana path recitation, with Gerethang SSS and Tinziring PS securing second and third.
Prizes were also distributed for a literary event held prior to the main Bhanu Jayanti celebration.
The celebration began with a welcome address by Organising Committee President Mr Bhagi Raj Ghimire and concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by SMC President Mr BS Limboo.
