Minister For Urban Development Department Inaugurates Rankey Mela 2026
Namchi, July 12 (IPR): The Rankey Mela 2026 was formally inaugurated by the Minister for Urban Development Department Mr Bhoj Raj Rai, today.
Organised by the Namchi Rankey Mela 2026 Celebration Committee, the inaugural day was attended by the Area MLA of Namchi-Singhithang Mr Satish Chandra Rai, Advisor Panchayati Raj Department Ms Rama Tamang, Chairperson Namchi Municipal Council Mr Ganesh Rai, councillors of the NMC, OSD Mr SJ Lepcha, ASP Namchi Mr Bikash Tewari, SDM (HQ) Mr Nim Pintso Bhutia, members of the Celebration Committee, and other dignitaries.
At the outset, the Minister, Mr Bhoj Raj Rai formally declared the opening of the Mela, following his visit to the stalls set up by various communities, SHGs, departments, and local entrepreneurs.
Addressing the gathering, the Minister highlighted the cultural and historical significance of Rankey Mela, stating that the festival has become an integral part of Namchi's identity. He mentioned that the mela, celebrated on the occasion of Saune Sankranti, has its roots in ancestral traditions associated with the monsoon season and prayers for a bountiful harvest. He explained that the ceremonial burning of the Rankey effigy symbolises the triumph of good over evil and the eradication of negative forces, following which the community comes together in celebration. Urging the people, particularly the younger generation, to preserve and promote this unique cultural heritage, he called upon everyone to keep the spirit of Rankey Mela alive for posterity. He concluded by expressing hope that the festival would continue to strengthen communal harmony and preserve the rich cultural legacy of the region.
This year Rankey Mela 2026 includes a wide range of activities, including Namchi Rankey Run, Rural Sports competitions, Jhim Jhim Bazar for local cusines, Heritage Walk to nearby by attractions, nature camping, adventure sports etc and many more.
