Mindful Media Workshop Concludes Second Day in Gangtok

Gangtok, April 8 (IPR): The second day of the workshop on Sensitive and Responsible Reporting for Mental Health Promotion for Media Personnel, themed “Mindful Media: Covering Crisis with Care and Compassion,” commenced today at a local hotel in Gangtok.
The workshop is organised jointly by the Press Club of Sikkim and Sikkim INSPIRES.
In his address, Chairman, Information and Public Relations Department, Mr Ashit Rai, expressed hope that the workshop was  beneficial for the participants and reiterated its core purpose. He urged the media fraternity to adopt responsible reporting practices and described the workshop as a platform for learning and opportunity. He also highlighted the vital role of ethical journalism in shaping public perception and promoting an informed society.
He further emphasised that mental health is a vast subject and encouraged everyone to contribute towards creating a better environment and making Sikkim a better state. He also conveyed his gratitude to the resource persons for conducting the sessions and thanked Sikkim INSPIRES for their support.
Program Director, Sikkim INSPIRES, Ms Rohini Pradhan, while addressing the gathering, expressed hope that the workshop had been fruitful and that the key takeaways would be implemented in practice.
She also expressed hope for more such engagements in the future.
General Secretary, Press Club of Sikkim, Mr DR Dulal, in his address, expressed gratitude to the organising team for the opportunity and expressed hope that the learnings from the workshop would prove useful in future events.
The session led by Ms Amiti Varma and Ms Tanya Fernandes from the Centre for Mental Health Law & Policy, Pune, began with a recap of the previous day’s discussions. They spoke about debunking myths surrounding mental health and mental illness, while also elaborating on the role of the media and its positive impact in shaping public understanding. The speakers highlighted the Papageno effect, discussed the World Health Organisation guidelines on suicide reporting, outlined the dos and don’ts of reporting, and emphasised the importance of putting these guidelines into practice.
The second half of the session focused on considerations for online, digital, and social media platforms. The speakers discussed the importance of changing the narrative around mental health issues and emphasised the need for professionalism in media reporting.
The session also featured an interactive segment, during which participants actively engaged in various activities.
The programme had the presence of Chairman, Information and Public Relations Department, Mr Ashit Rai, Program Director, Sikkim INSPIRES, Ms Rohini Pradhan.
Also present were journalists from different media houses, students, social media influencers and other dignitaries.
