Mangan observes National Sports Day with great enthusiasm

Mangan, August 29 (IPR): National Sports Day 2025 was observed at PM Shri Mangan Senior Secondary School today.
Organised by Sports & Youth Affairs Department, Mangan District, the event paid a befitting tribute to legendary hockey player, Major Dhyan Chand in whose memory and legacy the nation observes National Sports Day each year on his birth anniversary.
The programme commenced with the arrival of the Chief Guest, DC Mangan, Mr Anant Jain, who was accorded a warm welcome with the traditional offering of khadas. This was followed by the lighting of the ceremonial lamp and the collective reading of the Fit India Pledge, reaffirming the commitment towards fitness and a healthy lifestyle.
This year, the celebration was observed with the slogan “Khelega Desh, Khilega Desh” and the theme “Har Gali, Har Maidan, Khele Sara Hindustan; Khele Bhi, Khile Bhi”, underlining the importance of widespread participation in sports and fitness as a means of building a stronger and healthier nation.
The programme also featured the felicitation of distinguished personalities who have contributed to the promotion of sports in the district. On this occasion, Mr Pemzang Tenzing and Mr Phurba Sherpa were honoured for their outstanding contribution to sports development in Mangan.
The welcome address was delivered by Joint Director, Sports & Youth Affairs Department, Mangan, Ms Janim Lepcha, who highlighted the significance of National Sports Day, observed annually on August 29th to honour the “Wizard of Hockey” Major Dhyan Chand. She emphasised the values of discipline, teamwork, resilience, and fair play that sports instill, while also drawing attention to national initiatives such as the Khelo India Programme and the Fit India Movement.
The event also carried a moment of pride for the district as the Principal of PM Shri Mangan Senior Secondary School Mr Karma Tempo Ethenpa, was congratulated for being nominated for the National Teacher Award 2025.
The celebration included a series of sporting events, such as basketball, football, kho-kho, volleyball and yoga sessions. An exhibition volleyball match between District Police Mangan and the teaching staff of PM Shri Mangan Senior Secondary School was one of the highlights of the day, drawing enthusiastic participation and cheers from students.
Dignitaries present included SP Mangan Mr Sonam Detchu Bhutia, Panchayat President of Ringhim Nampatang GPU Mr Sherap Bhutia, Panchayat Member Ms Moti Tamang, CEO Education Mr David Gyamtso Lingdong, SHO Mangan Mr Prashant Rai along with facilitators, teachers, staff from BAC and S&YD and students of the school.
The programme concluded with a vote of thanks, marking the successful observance of National Sports Day, dedicated to paying tribute to Major Dhyan Chand and promoting the spirit of sportsmanship and fitness among citizens.
